Flagg, Edmund: Edmond Dantès [Monte Cristo Sequel], LIT v.1, 17 February 2009.

Edmund Flagg:
Edmond Dantès: The Sequel to Alexander Dumas’ Celebrated Novel of “The Count of Monte-Cristo.”
An Entire New and Enlarged Edition
New York: Wm. L. Allison Company Publishers: 1884.

In this sequel, a well-loved character dies, and the Count gets involved in the French revolution of 1848.
It can be read either directly after the Count of Monte Cristo, or after The Son of Monte Cristo.

We already have the original ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ by Dumas. We also have the first sequel by Jules Lermina (one of Dumas’ researchers and collaborators), ‘The Son of Monte Cristo’. This has often been incorrectly attributed to Dumas, though the wooden style is a giveaway. Even PG made this mistake for a while. (Madame Broshkhina has uploaded it. HarryT has also uploaded a version, following PG’s then incorrect attribution to Dumas himself. For some reason his title is hyphenated as Son of ‘Monte-Cristo.’)

Monte Cristo sequels are listed here:

I have left the rather idiosyncratic spelling alone, apart from a few obvious types. The source was PG. To my mind, the Flagg sequels are slightly less wooden than the Lermina one. They are somewhat better plotted, though the characterisation is stereotyped.
