Mobipocket DRM server meltdown
As many are scratching their heads about what's going on over at Mobipocket, one thing's for sure: Their engineers ought to sleep a lot less soundly these days. Since Wednesday, August 15, Mobipocket has reportly experienced a major technical problem with their DRM server - causing it to be turned offline. Third-party e-book retailers like Fictionwise selling protected e-books in Mobipocket format have temporarily switched to an alternative DRM provider, OverDrive's Content Reserve.

I'm not sure you are right about Fictionwise and an alternative provider. Ever since Mobipocket went down I have been unable to download any of my DRM books from Fictionwise. I just get a notice that Mobipocket is down. Just checked again about a minute ago (10:05 am EDT) and it's still not working.
Tangible proof of how DRM can make ebooks a poor experience! |

Paul, apparently not all books could be moved to the other DRM provider. Check:

Do you think MobiPocket will be setting up a second DRM server so if whatever happened happens again, they can just switch over right away?

With MobiPocket down, this makes (while MobiPocket is still down) BBeB (LRX) the #1 DRM based ebook format for eink devices.

Ha!
Who do you suppose might be conspiring with whom? I might believe outright (assuming someone could get to the machines) sabotage, maybe, but conspiracy would be a bit too complicated for me to buy. |
