"Students will test-drive the Kindle in class and help Amazon answer one fundamental question: How would you have to change a device that was designed as a personal pleasure device to turn it into a learning device?"

If true, this statement gives hope that Amazon intends to (or will be forced to) improve PDF functionality in order to take over the textbook market, which would benefit all readers. Maybe even widen format support?

"There will be no more pencils, no more books for 40 graduate students"...

Yes, there will. Because the DX doesn't allow search or annotation of PDFs, which is the e-format for most textbooks. They'll need additional pencils & notebooks to keep track of useful/interesting passages.

I saw a study which said that some school children can get back problems from the weight of books they carry to and from school. Some of these kids end up with a few kilos in their bags, so for that reason alone it would be great to see ebooks used more often.

Now many kids have a bunch of books and a laptop in their bags. A slightly more advanced kindle with improved note taking/internet applications would be ideal imo.
