Organizing series

Anybody have any tips for organizing books in a series on the Kindle or displaying the book's number in a series? I have them all in separate collections, but short of looking it up on Wikipedia, there's no way while browsing books to know what ordering the books are just at a glance.

The way that jumps out is to edit the metadata and add a number to the title (1. Princess of Mars, 2. Gods of Mars, etc) which seems kind of inelegant and like it could cause some confusion with the available sorting options when I have books from multiple series on it.

Thanks

I just prefix a short version of the series name and number to the title, if applicable, which usually makes them sort nicely in "order" i.e.:

Darwath #1: The Time of the Dark

or

Darkover series: The Planet Savers
Darkover story: The Word of a Hastur

if the series is so rambling and written-out-of-order that assigning numbers would cause a headache. For something sufficiently convoluted I might possibly add in the year written or what "era" of the series it belongs to, say:

Darkover series (1962): The Sword of Aldones
Darkover series (Ages of Chaos): Stormqueen!*

Hope this helps, and welcome to MobileRead!

* This one is a totally hypothetical example and is not available as an official legal e-book.

This is a much-asked question. The answer: use a Calibre plugboard to automatically prefix the series name and book order to the title. See the Calibre forum for more details.
