Hi

PW3 install

Due to a brutal failure of my Kobo Glo, I ordered from Amazon a unsponsorized PW3 that I will receive to-morrow. I ordered it only because I have a very positive experience of Koreader.

However, I realize the install will be quite different and I am brand new to this part of the forum.

There are two new steps (for me) previous to Koreader install:
- jailbreak
- install KUAL launcher

I am a little afraid of the jailbreak part : could someone point me on the latest relevant file for my PW3? Are there any advices about it?

My PW3 is undergoing an unexplained "custom clearance" delay, manned by DHL "experts" (who will charge me for it...)

Now five days and counting...

Unless you have picked some very unusual type of service (such as by sea), that custom's clearance delay will be handled as part of their already high prices.

If your talking about custom's clearance in the originating country, that is just an euphemism for a slow and lazy shipping agent.
It includes the time the package takes to reach the dhl pickup point.
Once dhl gets their hands on it, it will start to move. I normally get next day service across ten time zones.

I have KUAL working on my PW3 and it works well (in most cases), but it would be great if it was possible to start it from the main menu of the Kindle. Has anybody looked into that possibility, or is the menu just too deep burried in the Kindle software?

Kindle Menu should work on a PW-3

Then you would have to 'swipe (down from top)' and 'tap'
Two motions.

OR

If you don't change anything -
'tap' the KUAL active document.
One motion.

OR

If you search a bit, you will find that twobob wrote up how to put the KUAL launcher on the top banner menu.

I'm actually not quite sure Aeris's stuff will work on anything >= 5.6.5 (see the broken battery status tweak, for instance).

I have three Kindles sitting side-by-side here that I use every day - -
Two with a white "Kindle" name and one with a black "Kindle" name.

The white ones do have Aeris's menu on them (PW-1, not running 5.6.anything) -
The black one (PW-3) is running 5.6.1.1 but DOES NOT have Aeris's menu on it.

I guess I need to color code these things with different colors of day-glow paints.

OK, I must admit: I seem to have overlooked import information. I spent hours reading about KUAL and extensions (big

to all the developpers who did an excellent job!), but none of your suggestions ring a bell so far. To start an application in KUAL when reading a book, I click the top of the screen, select the home button, start KUAL and only then I can start the program of my choice. Then, to go back to my book takes another three to four clicks. So really good news if there is a better way, but I have not found it yet...

It is part of the "KUAL-add-ons" KUAL extension.
One of the menuitems provided by that extension causes the Store button to be replaced with a "Start KUAL" button. (You can also switch the icon to the KUAL rocket ship.)

You may have to take a look at how it works and update it for the recent firmware, since things may have changed since Goodreads was added. Or you could replace the Goodreads button instead.

But the general idea should be the same.

Thanks, I had a look, but I think you are referring to the Kindle menu extension and the Android like topbar hack. Nothing happens if I enable it in Kindle menu on my Kindle PW3 :-(

No, it is one of the 'starter' sets of extensions -
At one time, they shipped pre-installed.

Look at the attachments to the first post of the KUAL thread if you don't find a newer copy in NiLuJe's snapshots.

As knc1 said. aeris' Kindle Menu is a totally different hack.

P.S. You don't have to edit your post... In fact, please don't. I saw the first version of your post, and when you edited it almost an hour later I didn't get a New Post notification.

YES found it and it works!! Excellent tip! Very handy to have KUAL now always one touch away. I would never have found it with the help of you guys! many thanks to @knc1 and @eschwartz.

I have now most of the interesting extensions installed and working on the PW3! Some hacking needed here and there. Some applications need the line "export TERM=linux" to make it work and some issues with the libraries, but I got it all working now.

BIG THANK YOU to the community. What al lot work you all did!! Looking forward to try and add some extensions myself!
