In this easy-to-read handbook, two respected Bible professors will help you make sense of the Bible, book-by-book. Using a conversational tone, they cut right to the heart of the matter, focusing on two main questions: "What does it say?" and "Why does it matter?"

Whether you're a seasoned reader of Scripture or reading it for the first time, you're sure to come away with a better understanding of what the Bible is all about and why it is the most important book you'll ever read.

FREE - The Holy Bible - Old and New Testament: New Life VersionTM (New Life Bible) by Compiled by Barbour Staff

  • Print Length: 1408 pages
  • Publisher: Barbour Bibles (October 1, 2014)
  • Publication Date: October 1, 2014

Spoiler:
Looking for a Bible you can really understand? Try the New Life™ Bible, specially designed to clarify difficult words and passages. The New Life Version—used around the world in mission work—is now available as an ebook edition. Containing the complete Old and New Testament text, helpful descriptive subheads throughout, and topical study outlines to further explain the scriptures, this NLV Bible is for everyone. Its limited vocabulary makes it perfect for younger readers, in English-as-a-second-language use, or even for longer-term Christians who just want a fresh perspective on the scriptures.

This unique scripture version, originally designed to reach people who did not speak English as their native language, uses a limited vocabulary of 850 words to simply and clearly share God's truth. For example, the term "justified" is rendered "made right with God," and "blaspheme" is rendered "speak against God." Ideal for seekers, new believers, or even mature Christians who want a new perspective on the Bible.

  • Print Length: 195 pages
  • Publisher: David C. Cook; New edition (January 1, 2010)
  • Publication Date: January 1, 2010

But instead of wondering how we got here, maybe we should revisit how we got started. And there's no better place to start than the beginning of God's Word, the book of Genesis. Part of Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe's best-selling "BE" commentary series, Be Basic has now been updated with study questions and a new introduction by Ken Baugh. A respected pastor and Bible teacher, Dr. Wiersbe takes an insightful look at the fundamentals for a life well lived. Listening to the Bible will change the way you understand scripture. The stories and poems and instructions comes in through the ears and consume your whole being as God's word becomes part of a living experience.

The Common English Bible is not simply a revision or update of an existing translation. It is a bold new translation designed to meet the needs of Christians as they work to build a strong and meaningful relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

A key goal of the translation team was to make the Bible accessible to a broad range of people; it’s written at a comfortable level for over half of all English readers. As the translators did their work, reading specialists working with seventy-seven reading groups from more than a dozen denominations review the texts and read them aloud to ensure a smooth and natural reading experience. Easy readability can enhance church worship and participation, and personal Bible study. It also encourages children and youth to discover the Bible for themselves, perhaps for the very first time.

Listen to our audio book about The Greatest Thing in the World by Henry Drummond. Written in 1880 by Scottish evangelist Henry Drummond, The Greatest Thing in the World draws its message from the Apostle Paul's argument that love is man's true path to God. Using a key text from 1st Corinthians, Drummond argues that while there are many virtuous emotions we all must practice cultivating in order to live a fuller life, none is more paramount than a loving outlook. With an urgent passion that bespeaks the era in which he lived, Drummond testifies that if we only take a little more time each day to operate from a basis of loving kindness, others will notice and be attracted to our living example.

FREE - - Jubilee Bible: From the Scriptures of the Reformation Kindle Edition

Spoiler:

In the Jubilee Bible 2000 (JUB), the usage and context tends to define each key word so you won’t need to depend on theological dictionaries or reference materials. Careful attention has been made to properly translate the first usage of each key word, and through to the last occurrence. Then, as the word makes its way across the Old Testament and if we make the correct match with the corresponding Greek word in the New Testament, an amazing pattern emerges. The Jubilee Bible is the only translation we know of today that has each unique Hebrew word matched and mated to a unique English word so that the usage (number of occurrences and number of verses where the word occurs) sets forth both a very meaningful number pattern and a complete definition of what God means by each word.

About the Editor

Russell Stendal, a former hostage of Colombian rebels, is a lifelong missionary to that same group in the jungles of Colombia. He is an influential friend to military and government leaders in Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Venezuela, and the United States. Russell’s ministry shares the gospel via twelve radio stations, hundreds of thousands of Bibles, books, and movies distributed through airplane parachute drops, and numerous speaking engagements for groups of leaders, prisoners, and individuals. Russell goes wherever the Lord leads, whether it’s to speak with a president or to go deep into the jungle to help an individual in trouble. He has witnessed thousands commit their lives to Christ.

The 2015 update to Lockman's Amplified Bible published by Zondervan is $3.99. I didn't realize until today that it's the new one and the sale is listed with others that end today (Jan. 4).

The blurb makes it sound like it's a minor update, but I find both the underlying translation and presentation style to be quite a bit different than the 1987 edition. For example, here's Genesis 1:14:

1987:
And God said, Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be signs and tokens [of God’s provident care], and [to mark] seasons, days, and years,
2015:
Then God said, “Let there be light-bearers (sun, moon, stars) in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be useful for signs (tokens) [of God’s provident care], and for marking seasons, days, and years;

Amazon, at least, did not show the digital list price, for my comparison purposes, so I checked ereaderiq.com. They show $12.99 as the digital list price.

You're a good salesperson. I had decided this morning that I was going to have to exercise self-control and slash my ebook buying expenses. Then comes along your post! ha After seeing your comparison of the readings from Genesis 1, I decided that this is a must-have.

Thanks.
