Is there another program besides ADE that can download books using ASCM files?
I've seen references that a Sony program exists, or existed, for their readers that can do it, but I have never checked that out. |

http://ebookstore.sony.com/download/ Edit The Overdrive Media Console for Windows also runs under WINE on Linux. It can download library ebooks with Adobe DRM, but I'm not sure if you can use it for books from outside the Overdrive system. http://omc.overdrive.com/ Last edited by GeoffR; 10-22-2013 at 08:15 PM. |

Hm. Can the Alf plugins get the key from that program? Maybe it would be worth it to look into it as an alternative to ADE.

Both the Sony and Overdive programs use the same Adobe account that ADE uses, so I guess authorizing one of these programs will use up one of your ADE registrations, same as authorizing ADE itself.
I just use ADE version 1.7.2, it is a horrible program for reading or organising the books, but if all you want to do is download the book for reading on another device then it does the job as well as anything. |

As I indeed only use ADE to download the books so Alf can de-DRM them, "not being able to read books if you switch ID's" is a moot point for me, and I don't really care how ADE works (or doesn't). It's always emptied after I've got my books cleaned up. |

Can't it run on Mono then, eventually? Keepass2 can already, for example. It doesn't require Wine at all.

Amazon pretty quickly added "reset furthest read bookmark" when it became a support problem. |

When you reach your activation "limit", I believe Adobe then allow you one additional activation every six months, or something like that. I know I've never had a problem with it, and I've installed ADE on numerous devices over the years.

No idea. I tend to just do without if it doesn't run natively on Linux. If I find I absolutely can't survive without a certain program that doesn't have a Linux substitute, then I just use a Virtualbox Windows guest machine to install it in.

Personally I'll cross that bridge when I have to. So far 1.7 is working fine. If it ever stops and the new version doesn't work under Wine it'll be a pain but not a showstopper. |

I hit the Adobe DRM limit a few years ago when I had 3 1st gen nooks break in a short period of time. I asked them to up my limit, it was done with no issues, and I've authorized a number of devices since with no problem.

- ADE 2.0 requires some kind of Microsoft framework and cannot work with Linux for this reason. I keep ADE 1.7.2 for display purposes only and installed 2.0 on a virtual XP. - For chess, you can install Scid vs PC which is a fairly advanced program. You can use Stockfish 4.0 (Elo over 3000) as a UCI chess engine (to be compiled). There are also many other good quality free chess engines and you can install other commercial ones if you wish. - Games: I use few of them but you can try Playonlinux . Remember also that SteamOS will be a Linux distro and that we can expect more and more games in the next months. |
