That is a wonderful idea... and would be nice to do it with ebooks too.

It would never work with ebooks, because it would amount to putting the files out on a public server, like the pirate sites. Digital files are not the same as physical objects.

Besides, these bookshelves gather people, in some way or another. I also like that. Of course DRM would be an issue, at least until they allow a certain number of transfers for a single file. |

Somewhere on the high floors of a New York city publishing complex, an executive just hyperventilated in anxiety over the thought of "Readers Sharing Books!!!!!!"
Really, I guess it is a nice thought but to me one of the biggest advantages of eBooks is not having to go somewhere to buy them. I'm an American Suburbanite. We don't wander city streets. |

^LOL.
I always liked the cozy bed and breakfasts that encourage you to leave a book and take a book. |

I don't think handing out free German books is such a great idea.

Here in Vancouver, we have a bustling garbage-picker community. I can't see any such thing working here because it would get cleaned out by those trying to make a few bucks at the used book stores. Perhaps it is only the Germans with their strong sense of what is proper that can pull this off.

We do a similar thing at our University club - bring in some unwanted books and share them in a little library. Not so much a one for one swap as just sharing books around. The comments about "scavengers" are probably all too true, this might only really work in a small community or a club. As for e-books, DRM is going to kill this idea so the best method is probably to work with Project Gutenberg or similar to get out-of-copyright books into public use.

As someone who travels extensively, and often stays in small guest houses, I can say that every one of them has ALWAYS had several shelves of books for its guests to take and leave... Many different languages, genres, conditions, etc., but always 3-4 filled shelves. And that's ALL it takes to maintain the library.
To do the same with e-books would require a dedicated computer (or two; Mac and PC) with great anti-virus protection, someone to maintain it, someone to to be sure that there were no books still protected by copyright, etc., etc., etc. While a nice idea, the implementation would be horrendous!
