Faster booting PCs!

New PCs could start in just seconds, thanks to an update to one of the oldest parts of desktop computers.

The upgrade will spell the end for the 25-year-old PC start-up software known as Bios that initialises a machine so its operating system can get going.

The code was not intended to live nearly this long, and adapting it to modern PCs is one reason they take as long as they do to warm up.

Bios' replacement, known as UEFI, will predominate in new PCs by 2011.

Sweet. This way I dont have to wait a whole 40 seconds to hang out on the internet all day.

Drivel. The BIOS part of a computer booting is maybe 5 seconds at most. The rest of the boot time comes from the OS and the HD.

Ok, I just cold booted my netbook, and the BIOS loaded in 4 seconds flat. How is that different from the "handful of seconds" discussed in the article?

And bloated code in Window 7, including services such as Itunes, Virus checkers, Flash, etc. Multitasking is a b*tch.
