Calibre exits after checking for updates

I know this is an old thread but I have been seeing this same behavior for a longish time.

Use case is
* kubuntu 12.04 (linux+kde).
* calibre running minimised to system tray (presently 0.90)
* no other windows active.
* update alert pops up, click cancel, and calibre closes.

I'll try to get some debugging output, is anyone able to suggest how I could simulate the update popup manually? Else will have to wit for the next update check.
