Does it mean that I can copy any font type with full unicode into reader? Does it mean that it is not necessary to have fonts similar to internal reader fonts? Could you explain in detailed way how you did it?

just out of interest, did you buy your portable reader in Korea (I know you can pretty much get everything there)? I'm there at the moment working for a short time and was wondering whether I could pick it up while I'm here.
Thanks |

I think the method has been discussed long time ago. But I can only find this in google cache:
http://209.85.165.104/search?q=cache...s&ct=clnk&cd=1 Now I copy and paste the instruction: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Originally Posted by porkupan, tranlated by GS So, I am describing the sequence on what I done. 0. Read and carefully grasp instructions from Igor Sk. (Mobileread's igorsk) on Rootfs modification, downloaded cramfs-tools.zip. 1. Figured out the size of the file system in Fsk partition. For this first downloaded 0х100 byte from /dev/mtd14 (./ebook.py get /dev/mtd14 0x100) checked the value of the second 32- bit word: 0x40A000 - it is the size of the filesystem of Fsk partition. 2. Downloaded all filesystem from Fsk (a.k.a. /dev/mtd14, mounted on /opt) as contiguous file: $ ./ebook.py get /dev/mtd14 0x40A000 3. Decompressed the file with command cramfsck (it you downloaded in the current directory the DLLs from CygWin, attached b y Igor Sk into cramfs-tools.zip Cygwin DLLs, then you do not need cygwin window, plain dos command line is ok. I myself hav e done all that in cygwin but it is not nesessary): $ ./cramfsck.exe -v -x opt -d opt.dt mtd14 4. To be sure compressed back the directory into contiguous file and made sure MD5 checksum is as before: $ md5sum mtd14 12e8e500e0dac98f9cd89650c0510d85 *mtd14 $ ./mkcramfs -D opt.dt opt opt.fs $ md5sum opt.fs 12e8e500e0dac98f9cd89650c0510d85 *opt.fs 5. Copied the prepared fonts into directory ./opt/sony/ebook/FONT 6. Compressed crams image with mkcramfs command: $ ./mkcramfs -D opt.dt opt opt.fs If somebody is lazy to download/upload the image, change it and compres it back you can download it from отсюда, unti l Sergey deleted it. 7. Swith the e-book to recovery mode $ ./ebook.py um recovery Reader got reloaded and was ready to receive "updates" 8. Tried to upload opt.fs: $ ./ebook.py pwrite "Fsk" opt.fs Because of it was done in DOS command line, it occurred that command cksum is needed (you can add the exe-file from cygwin to the current directory and everything will be ok if you took all dlls from cramfs-tools.zip). When I got through cksum, t he update of filesystem of Fsk partition was name successfully. 9. Swithched Reader into normal mode: $ ./ebook.py um normal There were warnings but the e-book reloaded ok and after some period a circle of arrows appeared which signalize content re load. The circle stayed on the screen longe then usial and I almost started worrying but instantly the native Reader menu c ame to the screen with Cyrillic letters. 10. This is essentially it. Did try RTF - works fine. Text file LRF from Librie did not try yet, will do today evening. See not reason for not working. It looks like Reader needs the file names to be Latin (I did try to load to SD card a file nam ed with Cyrillic - Бонч-Бруевич.rtf, it failed so I renamed to Bonch-Bruevich.rtf). The fonts Dutch801 BT and Swis721 BT with full Unicode I found on the net, Courier font I rewrote from the beginning till C yrillic with Courier New Bold (it is pretty much readable so I will rewrite it someday with some monospace font which is mo re pleasable, if I failed to find Courier10 BT with Cyrillic). Did not try to add more fonts. If you downloaded my image you can decompress it and rewrite the fonts or correct them. I don't like too much as the Dutch font is being rendered in RTF file (see picture above). I'd be pleased if somebody helpe d me with fonts. ------------------------------ Basically you can add any fonts you like if the size of file is less than 64M. To do this, you need tools: cramfs-tools.zip (to unpack) and Ebook_py_041.zip (to upload/download). They are all available. The more fancy idea is, put an initial script to OS, use this script to run third party ebook software at memorystick. I think this is not difficult to do. Of course, SONY will be mad. My understanding is, the OS runs on reader is partially palm, partially linux. Quote:

Thank you for the explanation. It is possible to understand from the masa link that it was Igorsk protocol. But it could be a bit difficult to use different font (not as internal one) cause reader OS possibly use and operate with internal fonts only. This why I asked masa to describe more details. masa Could you tell as your secret? Was it modified internal font or completely different one? I just cannot believe it was none original font. OK. Let you know. Before I explain this, I appologize for poor english grammar when you read
1. Download files 1-1. python 2.5 ( http://www.python.org/ftp/python/2.5/python-2.5.msi ) 1-2. korean localization package ( http://clien.career.co.kr/zboard/zbo...c=asc&no=13624 ) 2. Install python 2-1. install python 2.5 ( Install folder may be c:\python25\ 2-2. extract prs500hanglepack.zip 2-3. extract cksum & cramfs & ebookpy.zip file, and copy all of files to the c:\python25\ 3. Backup your prs-500. (You must plug both usb and power cable to the bookreader.) 3-1. run command window. ( cmd ) 3-2. go to the python folder. ( cd \python25) 3-3. type [ python ebook.py get /dev/mtd14 0x40A000 ]. (case sensitive) 3-4. After 10 minutes, press ctrl + pause break. 3-5. rename 0x40A000 to mtd14. ( this is an origianl backup file. I recommend you keep copy of this file.) 4. Extract backup mtd14 file. 4-1. Type cramfsck.exe -v -x opt -d opt.dt mtd14 4-2. You may see new /opt folder in the c:\python25 5. Change extracted rom file. 5-1. Open [ E:\Python25\opt\sony\ebook\application\resources\s cripts\main.xml ] files. 5-2. Change three strings at 8, 42, 45 lines to your new TrueTypeFont. 5-3. Copy new TTF files to [ c:\Python25\opt\sony\ebook\FONT ] You can use any kinds of .ttf files. Of course unicode TTF files. You must find exact font name. I recommend to use Font Creator Utility. 6. zip extracted rom files. Type [ mkcramfs -D opt.dt opt opt.fs ] Total size of opt.fs file must be less than 7 MB. 7. Go to the dibugger mode. Type [ python ebook.py um recovery ] Then, bookreader will reboot automatically, and show this screen. http://www.clien.net/zboard/data/ima...erhangle10.jpg 8. Update After few seconds, type it [ python ebook.py pwrite "Fsk" opt.fs ] And type y, and press enter 9. Finish dibugger mode Type [ python ebook.py um normal ]. That's all. All works finish, and bookreader will automatically reboot, and come back to the normal mode. Enjoy new windows font |
