Help unbrick my PW3

just got a new PW3 yesterday from Amazon. Tried installing update_KT2_5.6.0_initial and updating my kindle. I'm now stuck on the tree screen. I've tried hard resetting, but it doesn't work. Ideas? is this new firmware jailbreakproof at the moment??

Just to check, you tried to install update_KT2_5.6.0_initial on the PW3. I'm double checkign that that is not a copy/paste error.

The new firmware right out of the box can be jailbroken - if you use the right one.... But you used the one for a different device.

You may have "bricked" it, or maybe not.

The update will take 10-20 minutes even if it works, so put it on the wall charger and be patient for a little while...

But most likely it is bricked, we have similar threads of this, and the only way to repair is very complicated.

Some people have gotten very lucky with their bricked devices, and the kindle enters "fastboot" mode, which is a fallback way of programming it.

Others require soldering a serial port to the inside of the kindle, and as far as I can tell, may require running a script on your pc to manually type in the code of a working bootloader onto the kindle through that.


You shoudln't worry about this damages thngs inside the kindle I think, and more than it already has, the most likey thing that has happend is that the boot loader included in the KT2 image has been installed on your device.

What that will mean is that is the very first thing that boots up, and if you had the serial port connected, it would probably print an error message along the lines of "Unsupported board Id ###############", exiting.

*) Why in the world did you try to install a firmware for the KT2 onto a PW3?

Note:
5.6.0 is a firmware older than the version the PW3 was released with, which was 5.6.1.1.
If it was intended to work on a PW3, the PW3 would have shipped with it.

*) Back up to Step #1 and tell us what the first six characters of your device's serial number is.

*) Also post the link to the firmware package you tried to install please.

*) Is there any time, even very briefly, when your PC can recognize USB storage?
It might be for only 5 to 10 seconds, you have to watch closely.

This may require either returning the device to the seller for exchange or using the serial port to debrick it.
It might also be possible to de-brick it using fastboot and some special commands.
But before making a decision on what to do next, please provide the information requested (*) above.

just a boneheaded mistake on my part I was doing 2 PW2's and I didn't thiink and just put the same file onto the PW3 without thinking (obviously...)

when checking for usb, plug it into pc, and then hold the power button on the kindle until it reboots. ( the light turns off and back on , and then maybe off again)

If you are on windows you can use this program to monitor all your usb connections, even after they disconnect.

kindle doesn't reboot when holding down power button. That's the problem. Cannot hard reset either....

It is extremely unlikely to not be restarting.
The long hold does a hardware reset, hardware timer, hardware physical reset line - no software involved.
The only thing that will prevent that from operating is a totally dead battery.

Have you put the device on a wall charger?
Using a known good USB cable?
For how long?
With what external visible changes noticed?

Have you had this Kindle taken apart?
Have you had the case open?
Have you already tried to make a serial port connection?
With what result?

Thanks for your response. I have held the power button, timed, for 30 seconds and 40 seconds. I have done so both with the device attached to a power source and without. I see the battery light flash at about 10-12 seconds but the screen never goes dark or restarts.

The battery light is orange, not green but I have no way of knowing the level of battery.

Has not been taken apart or anything else. I have only tried the hard resets.

Put it on a known good wall charger using a known good USB cable.
Leave it there at least 24 hours.

Since the charger is partially controlled by firmware, and the firmware is not operating properly, we can not expect the light to be operating properly either.
So do not count on any external changes.
Put it on the known good charger, with the known good cable, assume that it is being recharged at the slowest possible rate (the default) which == at least 24 hours.

Take two aspirins and return tomorrow evening.
