What format is most of your music library in?

As a comparison to the current situation of paper books giving way to electronic books, I think observing how quickly our libraries of other media have transfered to newer formats offers some insight into how quickly the paper to ebook shift is likely to occur.

I was unsure which to pick - mp3 or CD. Although I listen to all my music in mp3 form via iTunes, its source is almost exclusively CDs that I buy. So I chose CD.

Cheers,
Marc

I've shifted all but the last 2 dozen CDs I bought recently to high quality MP3 (and will do the same with those 2 dozen one of these days) so I voted MP3. However, I also have a huge sheet music/songbook collection as well.

Btw, sheet music goes back over 600 years. I have illustrations of some that are over 500 years old.

I have like a dozen CDs left at this point and a couple pieces of vinyl. Now my husband, on the other hand, has a room practically devoted to his vinyl and CD collection. We roll our eyes at each other.

I voted for cds, but I'm listening to my system via mp3 player. The convenience of having music all day long without having to change cds is GREAT!

But when I want to hear what the music really sounds like I will turn on my cd player & spin discs.

I copied all my cassettes and CD's to MP3 because I needed to save space and weight when shipping and moving. But I also have 3 large cardboard moving boxes filled with sheet music and music books.

I'm in the same boat. I will eventually digitize all my sheet music and songbooks.

I've got about 110 GB of music now. Most of it is ripped from CD's I still listen to very occasionally. Lately though, I've stopped buying CD's. iTunes is usually only 2/3 the price of a CD here in Canada, and I can't see paying a 50% just to have the CD and packaging.

We have around 1000 CDs, and I still buy music on CDs and compress them myself. I've had negative experiences with the sound quality on both iTunes and Amazon and would just as well make them myself.

Which makes me HIGHLY annoyed when artists release iTunes only tracks that they'll only let you buy if you buy the while album from iTunes. Heart just did that with their new CD.

I'm mostly CDs. I have about 1/2 of it ripped to MP3 or whatever Apple's format is.

CDs sound a bit better, but MP3 playing is so much easier. It is tough for those of us who have hundreds of CDs to find the time to rip them all.
