FBReader 0.10.0 out now

FBReader 0.10.0 was released today for Desktop/Netbook computers only (for both Linux and Windows platforms), with other platforms to be released soon. From FBReader Google Group:
  • Network libraries integration has been added. FBReader can search and download books from Feedbooks.com and LitRes libraries. We plan to add more libraries in future releases.
  • Partial CSS support for epub files has been added. CSS support in html and fb2 is coming soon.
  • Epub and Mobipocket book formats support has been substantially improved.
  • Library view usability has been improved: you can now organize the tree either by author or by tag.
  • You can now select a word by double-click and a paragraph by triple-click.
  • Right-to-left languages and bidirectional texts support has been added.
  • Support for Arabic, Hebrew, Greek and Turkish has been added.
  • Czech localization has been added.
  • FBReader now has a new set of icons.
  • It's now possible to use OS scrollbar for navigating through the text.
  • Partial CSS support for epub files has been added. CSS support in html and fb2 is coming soon.
  • Epub and Mobipocket book formats support has been substantially improved.

FBReader is commonly used on the Nokia Internet Tablets, on the iRex iLiad and Digital Reader, and is the basis for the ebook reader in OpenInkPot.

The attached screenshots are from the 0.8.17 and 0.10.0 versions of Windows FBReader on an ePub. The 0.10.0 version reads the TOC, which was a major shortcoming of the previous version.

I tested this by searching for dickens and downloaded the ePub of The Old Curiosity Shop from FeedBooks, see the attached screenshots.

For more information, see Network book search in FBReader.

Cool-- is anyone working on a release for the iLiad? I'd like to get the library functionality back, if possible-- the new tags feature sounds good.

It's on my list. I was waiting for this, and hopefully will be easier to do with the new refresh manager.

Now I just need to find some time...

The FBReader Electronic Book Formats (supported and unsupported) pages includes lrf, but says "This format is not supported. Our current plans do not include this format either.". Based on the lrf link on that page, I would say that lrs is more likely to be supported that lrf. I don't know if that is the best way to get lrf support, and I am not even hopeful about lrs.

Have you tried LRFTools.? FBReader can read generic ePub, RTF and single-file HTML but I don't know how well it supports the output of convertLRF.

Does v0.10.0 has traditional pagebar as in v0.8.17? It seems that the bottom pagebar is replaced by a scrollbar on the right.

Well, it seems to be quite unstable on my computers (desktop, laptop, netbook) The epub engine is not really better than it was before, either. There could have been better and more stable enhancements after this long development time. I go back to Calibre as a reader.

You can switch back to the old pagebar, look at Settings -> Indicator. The scrollbar may be better for wide screens, as on most netbooks, but the pagebar contains more information.

Do they plans to support Cybook? There must be a lot of Cybook users like me who wish to have FB Reader on it.

Cheers

OpenInkPot includes FBReader. This is already working well on the Hanlin V3, although it is a long way from a 1.0 release (currently between 0.1 and 0.2). There are several issues with getting OpenInkPot on the Cybook, including a) an insanely small amount of main memory (16MB), and b) very few hardware keys. The reason (b) is significant is that FBReader was originally designed for "Linux PDAs", which included a touch screen and so FBReader generally requires a pointing device (touch or mouse) to function, although not for the actual reading step. OpenInkPot has implemented a (large) subset of FBReader's functionality using the 16 buttons and switches on the Hanlin. The OpenInkPot team are working on remapping the user interface to the Cybook's keypad and estimate it will take a couple of months.

Note that on the Hanlin, it is possible to leave the Hanlin firmware in place and reboot into OpenInkPot on demand. The only cost of this is the time it takes to boot into OIP and then the time it takes to reboot the Hanlin when you exit OIP.
