Thanks to some generous publishers who have caught onto this thread (and linked from other forums), I've been offered some steep discounts and free ebooks from them for my work on shutting these clowns down.

I haven't accepted any offers yet, but its nice to see the support from the publishers themselves..

Its really not as hard to get a site shut down as many people think, you just have to follow through at every step and get in touch with the right people at all levels.

It also helps to have an "influential, intellectual tone" when speaking with them.

This is all very impressive. I wonder if it is something you could teach and/or oversee? Can you imagine how effective it would be to combine your knowledge with a bunch of publishers organized together to provide all the leg work? Might take the load off of you while making the whole exercise even more sustainable in the long run. Just a thought.

Maybe I'll write up a HOWTO on it some time in the near future... if my plate clears up a little bit.

The "Anti-Phishing HOWTO for Publishers" or some such...

I just received another email... looks like elbook.com has 15 days to correct their whois information or it will be cancelled as well, after I pushed through to have this investigated by some private parties.

You might be asking... "Why is this important? Why go after the domain names?"

If the whois information is false (which violates the new ICANN regulations), nobody can contact the fraudulent person who owns and operates the domain.

If he doesn't put in valid information, his domain is cancelled, stopping the fraud.

If he DOES put in valid information, he can now be located, served, and prosecuted.

Its a double-edged sword which benefits the publishers in either case.

David here is a way how one could catch the real identity of the phisher:

He signed up for Google AdWords (see attached screenshot). Obviously he needs to pay Google for AdWords, so Google knows where the money comes from and who signed up for the AdWords account to begin with - and this way one could trace them back.

I googled realsoft.biz...it's a software reseller. Guess it wasn't just books.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...e:realsoft.biz

And I'd love that howto book.
