Robert Silverberg has teamed with Connie at previous Worldcons to present the Best Novel award, and they have a shtick they've evolved where they drag things out to heighten the suspense and make the nominees squirm even more. Connie was on the ballot this year, so Bob did the presentation solo. He announced the the traditional turning of the screws had never been his idea, and he wasn't going to inflict it on the nominees this year...and then proceeded to do so in a droll and hilarious manner.

It was quite fitting to see Connie get the award after being subjected to the same treatment she and Bob gleefully administered in previous years. It was obvious that though it wasn't her first Hugo win, it still meant as much as ever.

(I've met her. She's a charming and gracious woman as well as a superb writer.)

I'm gratified that the professors Foglio garnered another Hugo. I love Girl Genius, and wish they had it in ebook form.

Hubby had the same reaction. He is a fan of both Connie Willis & the Girl Genius series.
He's pulled it up online so that I can read it.

Having won three in a row, they also removed themselves from contention for 2012, to give someone else a shot at it.

Has anyone read Best New Writer Lev Grossman's Magician novels? I just know him from his tech articles at Time magazine. He wrote the best intro to an iPad review ever:

Quote:
Let me tell you a story. Once upon a time, there was a very rich, very clever man. He got up on a big stage and held up a new kind of computer. It was flat, and it didn't have a keyboard. This very rich, very clever man then tried to convince a bunch of reporters that in five years this flat, keyboardless computer would be the most popular kind of computer in the country. Some of them even believed him.
The year was 2000. The man's name was Bill Gates.

Start from the beginning. It's a complex and multi-layered story, and you really don't want to miss pieces. (It's also hilarious.)

Phil started in print and moved online to broaden his audience. He commented that his art changed in that he did have to adjust his pacing: in an online strip, there needs to be a "payoff on every page" to hold the audience attention.

Edit: Just to clarify, Phil began his career as a cartoonist in print, several decades ago. Girl Genius has been online since its inception.)

Some friends have the complete run of Girl Genius print collections. I got a chance to read them straight through on a visit, and it was even more effective than reading the thrice-weekly web updates.

Voluntarily. There is no Hugo rule about how many times you can win.

Previously, artist Michael Whelan removed himself from competition for similar reasons after winning a dozen Best Artist Hugos (often back to back).

The official rules governing the Hugos are in the WSFS constitution, here: http://www.wsfs.org/bm/const-2009.htm (Scroll down to Article 3.)

A useful FAQ is here: http://www.thehugoawards.org/hugo-faq/
