Still no Hugo for George (the written George, anyway).
I wasn't that nuts over any of the selections for Best Novel, to tell the truth. Out of all the nominations, I enjoyed Leviathan Wakes the most, but I still probably wouldn't have labeled it award-worthy. |

I really liked (and voted for) the eventual winner, Among Others.
Apart from that, Game of Thrones and the Encyclopedia of SF are the only other winners I gave my top vote to. |

I haven't read this year's winning novel, but I'm not sure if I will; it's been several years since I went out of my way to read a Hugo winner, and more than that since I thought a book that won deserved the praise.

All the more reason to try the runner-ups, then.

You're welcome.
Parenthetically, the awards ceremony was caught in an interesting glitch. Chicon was live streaming the event via Ustream. The stream was abruptly terminated, and the worldcon channel was banned for copyright violation. The termination occurred as Neil Gaiman was accepting the Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form Hugo for the Doctor Who episode, "The Doctor's Wife" which he wrote. The apparent trigger was that Chicon had shown brief clips of the nominated shows as the nominees were announced, before the announcement of the winner. The clips were clearly covered by fair use, so the reason for the takedown is unclear. Best guess is that the takedown request was issued by a bot monitoring likely places for violations. Three of the five nominees were Doctor Who episodes, one was Chris Garcia's acceptance speech for the Best Fanzine award last year, and the last was an episode of Community, an NBC series. NBC being overly touchy after the Olympics is a fair guess, and UStream had apparently had previous problems with copyright violations and has adapted a "shoot first and ask later" approach. (Renovation, last year's Worldcon, live streamed the ceremony over UStream without issue, including the clips.) ______ Dennis Last edited by DMcCunney; 09-05-2012 at 06:49 PM. |

The plug was pulled on the live webcast of the awards ceremonies because of incorrectly alleged copyright infringement.

I didn't realize it was being streamed, I would have watched. A lot of my friends from the writers group here were there...

The Paper Menagerie is a great story, only thing I've read that was nominated. Among Others is on my wish list.

The whole automated, bot-prompted take-down of the live Hugo awards video stream for copyright infringement is hilariously, crazy, stupid, scary. Even scarier is having absolutely no recourse once it happened.

They've currently taken their content validator out of the loop for "recalibration". (A fix that would let them more promptly restore an improperly blocked feed would be a good idea as well.) ______ Dennis Last edited by DMcCunney; 09-03-2012 at 09:10 PM. |

The tragedy was they had no problems with Ustream the year before.
Interesting to note was that A Dance With Dragons got the lowest votes in the final tallies. And happy for the novellas (though the other nominees could easily have won it as well), novelette (my first choice), and short story (first choice too) category. Much-deserved congrats to John Picacio, who's a wonderful and humble artist (he did the Song of Ice and Fire Calendar last year as well as the Del Rey re-issues of Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion books), and Jim C. Hines for fan writer. Big fan of all the podcasts and it was a tough decision. |
