That's actually fairly common practice, to use old ships to test naval munitions on. You can't really tell how a weapon will perform unless you actually use it.

The most remarkable thing to me is that they felt it needed to be reported on.

The footage of the explosion was pretty cool though -- broke it right in half!

yes, I agree it's fairly common practice, even amongst allies...worryingly it "only" took one torpedo...and the speed of the destruction does not suggest many survivors would have the chance to get to any life-boats...etc...

But that's kinda the whole point of submarines, GeoffC, to kill the other guy when they're not looking. War is a nasty business, any way you slice it. I think they also cut some of the sinking time out of the footage, which made it look even faster.

Besides, I think that was only a frigate (and an old one, at that), it'd take at least two of those torps to kill a carrier.

In the dim and distant past worked at Gould in the test department on the Mark 48 - affectionately knows as the green weenie. If you watch the explosion it is midship, blowing water from underneath the ship. A ship isn't designed to support itself only on the bow & stern.

Except that the ship wasn't a carrier. And, I would expect them to disable/remove a reactor before decommissioning a ship.

Even Dubya could have figured out that.....but then again, he may have asked to have the nucUlar reactor decommissioned.

Heard on Radio 4 (UK serious talk radio station):

Interview with some scientists about a survey of sharks

Interviewer: "So what are you looking for?"

Scientist: "We're looking for fins."

(Or was this a way to get a free trip to Scandinavia?)

also take into consideration, when they do these kinds of tests, they generally don't close the various hatches that are required to be closed during General Quarters. I'm not saying that the outcome would have been different, but simply would have taken longer.

Peanuts aren't nuts they're legumes (peas), so people may not realise a packet of peanuts may contain traces of nuts - hence the warning.

I've often wondered if the workers where the products are labelled "Made in a factory that handles nuts" could sue for deformation of character.

(If I remember correctly Topic may contain nuts).
