Guttenberg project

So, what is the difference between classics literature that Sony sells for $3.65 and the same ones available free from Guttenberg and formatted for Sony reader)? Example: see works by Jane Austen

The one Sony sells removes money from you and gives it to Sony... other than that, probably not much. Some purchased editions have good footnotes to explain archaic meanings and side references, but many don't... I wouldn't buy the classics without a chance to peruse them for "value-add" first.

The formatting will be plainer in the Guttenberg edition -- no italics, bold, underline, etc. Though there is some substitution sometimes, i.e. caps for italics and such.

If you're happy with the Gutt or Manybooks.net, go for it.

Gutenberg books are free as in beer and free as in speech.
Sony Books you have to pay for and you can't give them away to somebody else.

There are different groups trying to establish a logical markup-style for gutenberg, eg

Thanks for the link... I didn't know they were working on the markup. Very cool!
