Just what we needed - another picture format

One more picture format along side JPEG probably wouldn't attract much attention if it wasn't from Microsoft, but when they push a new format you probably can't ignore it completely. The photo format is called Windows Media Photo, and claims to have the following features:
* Multiple color formats for display or print
* Fixed or floating point high dynamic range image encoding
* Lossless or high quality lossy compression
* Extremely efficient decoding for multiple resolutions and sub-regions
* Minimal overhead for format conversion or transformations during decode

With the increasing power of hardware, even in mobile devices, I'm not sure that JPEG really needs this kind of radical makeover for a general purpose format. Well, not unless Vista uses so many system resources that in the future we have to squeeze a little extra cpu power wherever possible!

Via Slashdot.

You can bet it has nothing to do with resources but more to do with DRM and locking up your data so you can't move it to another system.

It sounds like a WiMPy format to me

I thought jpeg2000 was going to be the next big format for images (wavelet compression and all that). Whatever happened to that?

jpeg2000 decompression still uses alot of cpu. thats probably, why it hasnt succeded yet, because the compression results are alot better than jpeg.
