A Map of the World Based on Book Publishing

The International Publishers Association prepared a map of the world in which country sizes were adjusted to match the size of the country on the map to the value of their publishing markets. Check out how large Great Britain and Japan become, whereas the entire continent of Africa all but disappears.

Interesting!

The relationship between the USA and W Europe seems consistent with my prejudices. I'm a bit surprised at Canada's shrunken state, but this must be built on gross sales, not per capita consumption.

I'm kind of surprised that Mexico seems unchanged or roughly the same.

And Australia seems shrunken compared to New Zealand. How do the populations compare?

I don't know why, but I'm surprised Russia seems shrunken, I would have thought they would be big ereaders. I don't know why I thought that but I did.

I don't think this map is limited to ebook markets, I think paper books are part of it too.
And yes, you would think Canada would have if not a huge size, at least more presence.

It's hard to tell how large Canada is supposed to be on the map because of all the islands they include.

But a map like this is going to be confusing anyway because the geographical size of a country doesn't really have much connection with its population, which *does* have a relationship to its publishing market.

Mexico is the second biggest publisher of books in Spanish, just after Spain.

Some info about Latin-America is here.

That's why I was surprised. . .

Mexico seems to be the Spanish language media publishing center of the Western hemisphere. I was surprised that it 'merely' managed to show no change.

I am rather surprised that Germany's market seems to be considerably bigger than Japan's, despite Japan having a population that's almost 50% bigger.

From the article: " tiny slivers, meaning that the number of books published in those places is extremely low compared to the rest of the world". It's just based on number of books published within the country. I'm surprised Canada is that big actually.

No, it is based on the size of the market in USD/€. As the linked document says in the opening sentence: "The Global Map of Publishing Markets represents domestic publishing markets by market value at consumer prices."

Aus is about 22 million, NZ 4.5 million; Aus surface area is a bit over 7,700,000 km2, NZ 270,000 km2. Eyeballing the map Aus and NZ are probably much the same on a per capita basis.
