Foghorn Leghorn: "Now cut that out, boy, or I'll spank you where the feathers are thinnest."
*Ahem* Back to the great work of literature I'm quoting. Not that I have any objection to Looney Tunes, none whatsoever. Going by what I see here at MR, this book is on a lot of people's lists of something to read, someday. It rewards the effort. "British Beatitudes! … Beer, beef, business, bibles, bulldogs, battleships, buggery and bishops." and "History, Stephen said, is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake." |

^Ulysses by James Joyce.
I'm reading it right now and the history quote sounds awfully familiar. |

Woohoo!
This might be a tricky one, but it's one of my favourite books and favourite authors. I might have to give a few hints along the way, but you never know. "After you're dead and buried and floating around whatever place we go to, what's going to be your best memory of earth? What one moment for you defines what it's like to be alive on this planet. What's your takeaway? Fake yuppie experiences that you had to spend money on, like white water rafting or elephant rides in Thailand don't count. I want to hear some small moment from your life that proves you're really alive." |

No.
"When someone tells you they’ve just bought a house, they might as well tell you they no longer have a personality. You can immediately assume so many things: that they’re locked into jobs they hate; that they’re broke; that they spend every night watching videos; that they’re fifteen pounds overweight; that they no longer listen to new ideas. It’s profoundly depressing. " |

^It's Mainentance, but no, that's not the book.
"Everybody has a ‘gripping stranger’ in their lives, Andy, a stranger who unwittingly possesses a bizarre hold over you. Maybe it’s the kid in cut-offs who mows your lawn or the woman wearing White Shoulders who stamps your book at the library—a stranger who, if you were to come home and find a message from them on your answering machine saying ‘Drop everything. I love you. Come away with me now to Florida,’ you’d follow them." |

New avatar. Is summer over?
"Give parents the tiniest of confidences and they'll use them as crowbars to jimmy you open and rearrange your life with no perspective. Sometimes I'd just like to mace them. I want to tell them that I envy their upbringings that were so clean, so free of futurelessness. And I want to throttle them for blindly handing over the world to us like so much skid-marked underwear." |

Still no.
"You know, I really think that when God puts together families, he sticks his finger into the white pages and selects a group of people at random and then says to them all, 'Hey! You're going to spend the next seventy years together, even though you have nothing in common and don't even like each other. And, should you not feel yourself caring about any of this group of strangers, even for a second, you will just feel dreadful" And another hint: Spoiler:
