edition number: where to put it?

While editing metadata, where am I supposed to put the edition's number (such as 1st edition, second one and so on)? I was unable to understand it, sorry.

Thank you.

There is no "approved" method - it is up to you

I personally put the edition number (when relevant) as part of the Title for the following reasons
  • I want Calibre to treat each edition as a separate book
  • I want it to be easy to see visually when looking at a title list that I am interested in the Edition for this book.
If I will only ever have one edition of a book, then I tend to put it into the comments instead.

I use this method for some of Baen's (the Authors original) versions that were posted to the Free Library, that I also had the current edition.
Recently, Baen is releasing 'Second Editions'

Note: this will possibly break Get Metadata if an ISBN (or other identifier) is not supplied

Thank you, this is a good workaround. But, out of curiosity, is that by design or is it just a missing feature?

Thanks again.

As far as I know there has been no feeling that including the edition number explicitly as a discrete item of data is much use to the vast majority of eBook users, so no urge to code the support.

Maybe ther's some 'feeling' that Calibre should be able to support multiple instances of the same 'book'; edition is one use of it, publisher is another, language is another...

Non trivial to implement, and many (most (vast majority)) wouldn't want the extra level of complexity.

If it were to be done, then a mechanism to cater to author pseudonyms would also be nice. I'm thinking of a Calibre-Heavy but I suspect more folks would prefer a Calibre-Lite

Calibre has a Language field, so it does support that.
IMHO Very few people keep multiple versions (I think I have 3 out of 5K. 5 if you count ARC's)

One of my 5 favourite books at all is «Oblomov». From the russian original, there are many translations to Italian (my mother tongue language), many different editions, with different notes, prefaces, and so on. But maybe it is not work group them together into the same record, you can just create a record for every edition (as a matter of fact, they are different book with different ISBN) and just search for the name to get them all.

Very old thread, but I was looking for the same thing.

I think a standard edition field would be great!

My workaround: A custom field (type "long text, not shown in tag browser").

At the time of the original thread, I didn't see any use for an edition field. At this time, I have 6 books with edition numbers out of 12500 and I decided to place the edition into the subtitle field which my Kobo ereader is happy to display.

That's what I thought. - So putting the edition in your own subtitle field is similar to having your own edition/version field...

The advantage to using the custom subtitle field for me is, as mentioned, Kobo's ereaders will display subtitle in the library view. Subtitle is a standard option in the KoboTouch and KoboTouchExtended driver metadata configuration so all the heavy lifting in getting the information to the device in the right location has been done for me.

Since I have 6 books with editions and about 120 with subtitles, it made sense to use the same custom column for both.
