I just spent the last few minutes fixing the text in the trove newspapers. The references to Toochow (after a search of Toochow shipping), all actually refer to Foochow. The newspapers in Trove are all electronically scanned, and if you read the picture of the newspaper you can fix the transcription.
Therefore, I have just knocked out a few more possible google searches for Toochow. Caption for this image.... The great China race: The clipper ships Taeping and Ariel passing the Lizard, September 6 1866 on their homeward voyage from Too-Chow-Foo. © NMM |

Were these tea clippers or opium runners?

I am guessing they had tea onboard because they were going home. They took the opium TO China to sell, then buy the tea to take home.

What do you do when you've had a day from hell at work? When you were stuck in a 2 hour meeting in the afternoon (that should only have lasted 20 minutes) so bad you were seriously considering chewing your leg off to escape?
That's right! Rake leaves in the dark! Quite restful! Neighbors walk quickly by avoiding eye contact. I'm feeling much better now! |

A dark, rainy Saturday morning - perfect for sleeping in quietly after a long stressful week.
With: Goldie cat running side to side on the bed chirping loudly. Sammie cat head-butting me as she wails. Nascar Stella cat running in & out & in & out & in & out of the bedroom - banging each time into the door and ricocheting off furniture legs. Ahhhhhhhhh ....... Saturday mornings ....... start your weekend off right! |

Taking a break from plotting routes and waypoints on my mapping software for this week's trip to the Sea of Japan. Unfortunately, it seems as if the weatherman might not be favoring this ride... At least 40% chance of rain every day!
