Unhappy Every Time I Add a Book It Duplicates

Like the title says, every single time I add a book to Calibre, it instantly duplicates the book.

I'm running the latest update and I've removed all my plugins. It still does it.

It's been doing this for several months now and I'm at a loss, but I'd really like to figure a way to stop having every book duplicate itself.

How about running calibre in debug mode, adding a book and posting the resulting log.

My Question is why do you keep adding the same book?
Archive or discard the source once added so you don't do it again.
Archive (off system) is you really need another way, backup plan when your HD/system melts down bad

@Teeg - which OS/version, and which calibre version ?

How are you adding the book - DragDrop into book list, Windows Send To, Autoadd folder, one of the Add books options (add from single folder/from multiple folders and subfolders/from ZIP or RAR?

@theducks - both rows have Mark push pins, and the same Date which suggests they were created contemporaneously.

BR, he could have added the Book and the (from another calibre) OPF.
The OPF might have the better metadata, but using both needs care.
Also note Origianal-xxx. This is clearly a Calibre (library) book folder being added

My assumption was that ORIGI... format (EPUB is my guess) would have been created by an add time conversion

@Teeg - could you post your Add Books preference settings - In Advanced mode, you can add images via the paper clip tool:

I don't. Calibre adds it.

I should have added that. All the books are loading to Calibre automatically from my download folder. Dropping books in only loads 1 copy.

Quote:

Calibre 5.43 Mac OS 12.2.1 Monterey

I've had these same settings for years, this started happening probably 2-3 months ago.

I completely forgot about debug mode. I'll try it.

I've had these same settings for years, this started happening probably 2-3 months ago.
Is the 'downloads' folder something you created or is it part of the MacOS furniture?

When did you install Monetary - might it have been 2-3 months ago?

The downloads folder is part of the Mac system.

Monterey could possibly be the issue, although that leaves me kind of stuck.

Try using a different folder as the auto add folder.

Okay, this is weird. I changed the auto-add folder to a new one, restarted Calibre, then downloaded a book, which went to my downloads folder (forgot to switch downloads to let me choose a folder).

The book added once in calibre... so apparently it's automatically adding from the Downloads folder regardless, and because I had the autoadd set there, it was adding it twice.

Honestly, I don't mind it auto-adding from the Downloads folder, but it might be something to note (just a message on the Adding Books page that Macs will auto-add from Downloads would be nice).

Thanks Kovid!

It definitely does not auto add automatically, from any folder. You likely setup a script to do it some time in the past and forgot about it.

I think it's a combination of how Monterey works (it auto-opens anything in the downloads folder) and that my computer is set so book files are opened by Calibre. So if I download a DRM free book to the Downloads folder, the system sees that the file is an epub and opens Calibre automatically if it's closed.

The problem was that I had auto-add also set to the same folder, so when Calibre opened, it was receiving the file the computer was sending it and at the same time, recognizing a book that needed to be added, and adding it, so I'd end up with 2 copies of the same book.

You might want to get someone else running Monterey to double check and see if that's how it's working for them as well, but it's actually the first thing that makes sense on this.

One reason I think this is the answer is that it also auto-opens Adobe Digital Editions if I download a book with DRM. Another reason I'm pretty sure Monterey is to blame is that the book itself isn't disappearing from the Downloads folder even after it's adding to Calibre, now that I've moved auto-add to another folder.

Well if the OS chooses to auto-open files (isnt that a huge security risk?) there nothing calibre can do about it.
