Add -romance to the advanced search. That seems to turn up a lot classic Westerns

The e-reader fixes that quite nicely. Using that, we read the same "book" all the time

My tastes in music are similarly wide-ranging which also raises some eyebrows. I don't think my tastes are superior or inferior - they're just my preferences. However, the more people with few preferences the better - shorter waits for "geeky" library books!

Oh, and right now, am reading: The Inventor and the Tycoon - Edward Ball (history / true crime); the second book of Ford Madox Ford's Parade's End; and DC Universe Secret Origins - bound reprint of classic superhero comic books - highly recommended for those wishing to relive their formative years

FWIW, the diversity of readers on MR is what makes this place special, whether we're talking what we read, how we read, or what we read it on! To each his / her own!
Fellow (sister?) reader of lit fic, non-fic, and especially history (especially social history) who is also "approaching her 60s," here. I read less serious sci-fi now than I did in my teens and 20s (when I was the only female I knew who read sci-fi) and I am also currently reading FMF's Parade's End trilogy. Which I understand is being shown on HBO in miniseries format this week (I don't get HBO).

WHile I don't think I'm a book snob, I am a bit judgemental about people who don't read at all. Seems pretty boring to have to live in the mundane present at all times, that or get your only escape through video formats instead of being able to use your mind's eye to imagine other places and lives.

Anne Rice made vampires popular. Stephenie Meyer made them sparkly.

Hm...

Quote:
Meyer says that the idea for Twilight came to her in a dream on June 2, 2003.[16] The dream was about a human girl and a vampire who was in love with her but thirsted for her blood.
50.000 people went before.... and another 50.000 will go after.

Quote:
Of the 15 letters she wrote, five went unanswered, nine brought rejections, and the last was a positive response from Jodi Reamer of Writers House.[19] Eight publishers competed for the rights to publish Twilight in a 2003 auction.[19] By November, Meyer had signed a $750,000 three-book deal with Little, Brown and Company.
So, getting published and getting rich by it is more luck than anything it seems?. If your story is half-decent, you could make it by just contacting as many agencies as possible.

Hmm, Anne Rice. I enjoyed the Mayfair Witches more than her vampire novels, though.

LOVED the Mayfair Trilogy +. (The + being because she later tied them into the Vampire Chronicles.) I'm planning on reading the entire Vampire / Mayfair chronology. I've read most of them already, but it's been years, and Rice is on my short list of authors I can re-read.

I thought the reference was to the Sleeping Beauty trilogy.

I read a lot of erotic romance but I haven't read that one. BDSM is my least favorite kind of erotica. I read this book and I thought the main character really needed therapy.

I both read romance novels and say of them that it is porn for women. The reason being that I am hoping to get my conversation partner to realize that what most women find sexy is a plot - hence "porn" - and not just a closeup of genitalia as is usually marketed at men - hence "for women".

I am too, but only after they voice that they believe, as the author does, that the main characters have a healthy relationship. I then decide that this is not a person with whom I want to have any type of relationship. No part of the way the relationship in 50 Shades is written is healthy. There are healthy relationships that feature BDSM, but the author misses the mark at writing one.

I'm not sure I get that but okay.

There are so many levels of romance novels from No Sex to Sexy. Then you leap over to Erotica Romance which I do read and just plain Erotica which I'm not a fan of. I need plot, characterization, suspense and some good ole fashion sexual tension or good chemistry if it's an inspirational.
