My first thought was they should have spent 15 seconds and looked it up in the Urban Dictionary.
Then I saw their promo video... "Hi I'm Kate and this is my nook". I now think they did look it up and were hoping for word of mouth advertising by getting people talking about the name. Seems to have worked. They could have called it the baaaan. B&&N or the Book&N |

I think it is derived from the WiFi access at B&N Brick and Mortars, and the ability to read the entire content of any of their online books on your Nook, whilst sitting in the comfy faux leather chairs in their reading nook.
