A British Police Procedural

ABOUT THE RAFFERTY SERIES
DI Joe Rafferty, working-class lapsed Catholic, is cursed by coming from a family who think - if he must be a copper - he might at least have the decency to be a bent one. When you add the middle-class, moralistic intellectual DS Dafyd Llewellyn to the brew the result is murder with plenty of laughs.

Dead Before Morning

Quote:
Product Description
A brilliant crime fiction debut, which introduces a sparky new double act in Inspector Joseph Rafferty and Sergeant Dafyd Llewellyn. Inspector Rafferty is under pressure. Not only has he got his Ma on his case – expecting him to spring a distant cousin from the cells, but the naked body of a teenaged girl has been found in the grounds of Elmhurst, a private psychiatric hospital. And with the help of upright Welsh sergeant Dafyd Llewellyn he must track down the killer. But Rafferty’s first murder case since his promotion is not going to be easy. The girl’s face has been mutilated beyond recognition. And Elmhurst’s owner De Anthony Melville-Briggs – the suave social climber who thinks his wife’s money can buy everything, including the police – claims he has no idea who the victim might be. Perhaps, he suggests, the killing might be the work of a jealous rival doctor. Rafferty takes an instant and deep dislike to Dr Melville-Briggs and his high-ranking connections. His desire to prove the arrogant doctor guilty of murder begins to border on obsession. Sergeant Llewellyn, however, doesn’t share the Inspector’s conviction – the doctor has a seemingly solid alibi. Then the identity of the girl is finally discovered, and a whole host of new suspects emerge – each with a motive that gives the police plenty to think about. It is only when Rafferty remembers his forgotten promise to his Ma that he go to see the cousin still languishing in the cells, that he gets his just reward, He begins to turn the case around in time to get the press and an angry superintendent off their backs.

Down Among the Dead Men

Quote:
Product Description
When Inspector Rafferty sees Barbara Longman lying so peacefully in the flower-filled meadow by the River Tiffey, he finds it hard to believe she's dead. Mrs Longman was a popular woman - who could have wanted to kill her? The murder appears to bear the hallmarks of the Suffolk serial killer, but could a copycat murderer be at work - a copycat moreover, who enjoyed intimate knowledge of the victim? With the help of his sergeant, Dafyd Llewellyn, Rafferty begins to question Barbara Longman's family, descendants of the rich and powerful Maximillian Shore. As their inquiries continue it becomes clear that every person in the Shore household has motives in plenty for wanting Barbara out of the way. So why should Rafferty have an instinctive feeling that their long-dead patriarch is in some way connected with Barbara's murder? Rafferty's instincts are not enough, however, and firm proof of the killer's identity remains elusive. Until, in a blinding flash of inspiration, a memory from Rafferty's own past provides the vital clue which leads him to the terrible truth.

Death Line

Quote:
Jasper Moon, internationally renowned ‘seer to the stars’, had signally failed to foresee his own future. He is found dead on his consulting-room floor, his skull crushed with a crystal ball and, all, around him, his office in chaos.

Meanwhile, Ma Rafferty does some star-gazing of her own and is sure she can predict Detective Inspector Joe Rafferty’s future – by the simple expedient of organizing it herself. She is still engaged on her crusade to get Rafferty married off to a good Catholic girl with child-bearing hips. But Rafferty has a cunning plan to sabotage her machinations. Only trouble is, he needs Sergeant Llewellyn’s cooperation and he isn’t sure he’s going to get it.

During their murder investigations, Inspector Rafferty and Sergeant Llewellyn discover a highly incriminating video concealed in Moon’s flat, a video which, if made public, could wreck more than one life. Was the famous astrologer really a vicious sexual predator? Gradually, connections begin to emerge between Moon and others in the small Essex town of Elmhurst. But how is Rafferty to solve the case when all of his suspects have seemingly unbreakable alibis?

The Hanging Tree

Quote:
‘The original crossroads used to run by here,’ Sam told Rafferty. ‘Legend has it that this was the legendary Hanging Tree.’

When Inspector Rafferty first hears the report that a bound and hooded body has been seen hanging from a tree in Dedman Wood, he dismisses it as a schoolboy hoax. But his anxiety levels take a hike when the witness turns out to be a respectable local magistrate, who identifies the corpse as Maurice Smith, a man once accused of four child rapes. Thrown out on a legal technicality, Smith’s case had become a cause-celebre which had generated much ill-feeling within the community. And now Smith seems to have disappeared…

Then the body turns up again in the woods. Could there be a self-appointed executioner at work, meting out his own form of justice on the legendary Hanging Tree?
