Fonts, fonts, and even more fonts
I've found a couple of sources of free fonts.

Free fonts are good, though I'm not so sure I'd want to use any of those as a body font. Title pages or headers, though, no problem.
SIL has some decent fonts available for free. Specifically, I like the Charis and Gentium packages. The nice thing about these is that the license fully allows for embedding and redistribution. There's also the URW Fonts collection that you can get from the Ghostscript page. It includes clones of several classic typefaces, including TNR, Helvetica, Optima, Garamond, Palatino, etc. That package is licensed under the AFPL, though I'm not really sure how embedding/redistribution of those fonts is handled. At the very least, they're free to use for your own purposes. EDIT: And after a little more digging around, I came across the Font Squirrel site. These can all be downloaded for free, but redistribution/embedding will depend on the license for each one. ("Free for commercial use" does not necessarily mean that you can redistribute it.) No. The term "body font" refers to the font used for the "normal" text of a book.

Gentium looks like a beautiful font! Unfortunately both variants (basic and normal) are unsuitable for me - "normal" doesn't contain bold variants, and "basic" doesn't contain two glyphs from my language :-(

You might consider Andron FreeFont or Cardo, though in my opinion neither is particularly good looking on an e-reader screen.
Unfortunately free, good, and complete e-reader-friendly serif faces are few and far in-between. I made a post in the Sony 505 forum about serif faces, but didn't really cover any ground on the free front that isn't covered here. |

oh and actually i have tried the déjà vu fonts. the serif has a very complete character set which is why i chose it to start with (i needed some relatively obscure glyphs and i couldn't find them in any other font). they're very nice, but overall i prefer fontin. i'll keep déjà vu for that one specific book though, and i might go back to them in future.
