I would like to roll up my ebooks and put them in my pocket, I would also like for them to be powered by the sun or from kinectic energy, local manufacturing would be nice as well.

The Future lies within the Past
Did you ever hear of the "Readius"? Philipps (Polymer Vision was a subsidiary, I seem to remember) ditched that project and sold it off some year(s)? ago. Have a look at the MR wiki under Readius and at this thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51247

Yes, I remember Radius. They even had a subforum right here on MR. But this is much better and in color. Radius was an idea before its time. A roll-up screen may still be coming to a phone near you in the future, that would make small device size AND big screen at the same time possible.

PolymerVision is still working hard on a successor to the Readius. They were literally about 3 months from full launch of the original when the rug was pulled out from under them. Their largest investor was involved in a huge European Ponzi scheme. Out went the investment and they couldnt secure new funding as there was some question about ownership.
They went into bankruptcy and were purchased by Wistron. Wistron is fully funding and backing them to create a "next generation" device. In the intervening time period they lost their supply chain and the device was surpassed electronically. The good thing was that the team stayed in place and had continued to work on improvements. So it wont be long before the new device emerges. They have had other irons in the fire as well. Recently they were involved with the creation of the first organic processor. They actually built the thing http://www.eetimes.com/electronics-n...ates-at-ISSCC/ Edzer Huitema, Chief Technology Office who I got to know last year at SID, will be giving a talk about thin, rollable displays in June at the Printed Electronics conference in Frankfurt. And in just a couple of weeks at SID in LA the ceo Karl McGodrick will give a presentation that will "look at the future of mobile computing and eReading, highlighting the role to be played by flexible, foldable and rollable displays. This will include some market forecasts." |

I think that if the Readius is to be successful as a reader, they need to start with a display with a resolution and contrast comparable to the Kindle 3. I'd probably be willing to pay up to about $250 for a Kindle-sized reader that can be folded into something that fits in my pocket, maybe more for one in color.

of course if they were to make a device with eink display it would be the most current tech. so that would be Pearl like K3.

That's rather interesting, but I'd probably tear the damn thing in two if I had to do all navigation with bend-gestures. It'd be really nice to have something like this in color, though.

Actually, this is much more interesting then the cell phone or bend gestures.
http://www.slashgear.com/e-ink-is-ha...ties-04150095/ You can see real time video on a color eink display. They even show a bit of Harry Potter on the video, It's very nice. |

I've been waiting [im]patiently for a device with a roll out display. If it can run video that's a huge plus.
Oh, and I see whoever made those renders is a fan of WebOS. Last edited by Dylrob; 05-09-2011 at 06:44 PM. |
