After coming from Sony readers (300, 350, 650), trying Kobo Glo then Kobo Touch, I've finally settled on the Paperwhite. However I totally agree that the best of all would be the Kobo's f/w and PW light (and capacitive screen).

None of the paperwhites I have had showed the blueness referenced here, at all. The light seems very natural to my eyes. However, there were bruising (color blob) issues with the first ones I tried.

In my mind the store that you buy the books from is more important then the reader. In fact when a pal of mine told me that he was going to buy an ereader, his question was which reader should I buy. My reply was well which store is the best one for you? We spent the better part of an hour looking at the merits of the different stores such as amazon, kobo and sony. I told him pick th estore first.

The paperwhite is a great reader but how do you like amazon's store?

^ That's what I was thinking, but maybe it depends on the type of genres read. For what I read, nothing beats Amazon. The suggestions (customers who bought this, also bought) are dead on, too.

You can read Amazon ebooks on the Kobo just fine. One of the numerous reasons I picked the Kobo Glo is because it can read almost any format, including Amazon. To me choosing an open ereader that can read ebooks from all over the place (all stores) is more important than choosing 1 store.

Immaterial to me as I buy from wherever I like, always have done whether I am using my current Kindle PW, or previous Kobo Touch or Sony 300/350/650. It is the reader that is important in my choice, both hardware and software are taken into account.

Without converting the books first?! How do you get them onto the Kobo?

The Kobo devices will read mobi files that do not have DRM. But, it isn't perfect. Some work better than others. Personally, I always convert to epub using calibre.

I store all my books in Calibre, so it's irrelevant to me what format they're in. If conversion is required, Calibre just does it.

Ah, but not the new AZW format and not DRMed content, so some of the books, especially newer pnes (?) would only work if you unDRM them and convert them.

I know, but Nothingness' statement sounded like it did not imply any type of conversion. I personally prefer getting books wirelessly from the cloud anyway (I hate having to turn on a computer).

DRM is definitely a problem. I don't know about AZW format as I haven't knowingly tried one.

This "openness" of the Kobo is a smoke screen since you have to remove DRM from Amazon books. And if you do that, then you might just as well convert the file to another format. So in the end, all readers are created equal as far as openess is concerned. None is really able to read books from all stores directly, but they all can handle it if you know how to disinfect and convert the files.

Yes, epub readers give you the choice of more stores without DRM removal --- but for me Amazon is by far the most important store.

Find Kindle is the best reader. It is just bright enough so there is no eye strain, and white, no blue tint. The Kobo glow light looks over powering, to bright, so could lead to eyes train.

Love and Amazon just keep one step ahead of all the other ebook readers out there.
