Short stories (~100 pages)

What are some best short story fiction books? I am looking for reading in between breaks of work.

If you don't mind old scifi, try The Past Through Tomorrow by Robert Heinlein. Great stories, dated, but fascinating how his predictions of technology came true.

Well, depends on your tastes but ... my favorite form is short stories and I've posted a number of threads/links

I love the annual "Best American Short Stories" and the "Years Best Science Fiction" by Gardner Dozois both are available (in recent editions) as ebooks.

Stephen King wrote some very good collections of short stories in his earlier days:

Night Shift
Just After Sunset
Skeleton Crew
Nightmares and Dreamscapes

And a more recent collection
Full Dark No Stars

It's just one story, but I recently read "In the Penal Colony" by Kafka. Full text here:

I enjoyed it. It had a very sci-fi (and contemporary) feel, even though it isn't sci-fi.

Jeffrey Archer

There are some good one from Jeffrey Archer:-

A Quiver Full of Arrows (1980)
A Twist in the Tale (1989)
Twelve Red Herrings (1994)
The Collected Short Stories (1997)
To Cut a Long Story Short (2000)
Cat O'Nine Tales (2006)
And Thereby Hangs a Tale (2010)
The New Collected Short Stories(2011)

Most of them make a good reading.

John Collier's Fancies and Goodnights has several great stories and all of them are very readable. Most have an element of the fantastic in them, though some just have an unexpected twist at the end and most have a quirky sense of humor. Some were adapted for Alfred Hitchcock and Thriller on TV. Evening Primrose is probably his most anthologized story.
