How did you discover your favourite author?
How did you discover your favourite author? Please be honest, even if you think you know why I am asking.
I discovered mine through buying a new paperback. I was attracted by the cover image and read the first 20 or so pages in the shop. Another I discovered by mistake, also buying a new paperback based on the cover image but without reading any of it. I thought it was a novelisation of something I had seen on TV the night before, but it turned out to be something completely different. A more recent favourite I discovered through a collaborative project with another writer who was already on my watch list. That was a new ebook bought with fingers crossed on the strength of the collaboration. Everyone else has been through buying second hand paperbacks, or more recently through the parrot on my shoulder. |

I love libraries, always have and, hopefully, always will ( I don´t think they'll be rendered obsolete). I was bound to discover him anyway, because he's very popular, but I'm happy it happened this way

Almost certainly a library loan. There's no way my family could have afforded to buy all the books I read as a kid, and so the library fed my massive habit.
Libraries are so important... |

Through picking up a paper book of my Dad's many years ago.
Interestingly, this probably wouldn't have happened had my Dad read on e-books back then. |

if "acquired a used ebook" means what I think it means - then that's how

Found 'The Shining' sitting around our house when I was a teenager - it was my older brothers. So it's 'other' for me!

Unfair to (other favorite) Authors
My favorite author? I have many
the one choice I don't use is buy HB (new or used). I read HB from the Library. Many of my favorite, discoveries , were published in Analog Magazine . Sadly, I ended a 40 year subscription run because my tastes no longer line up with what is being published there. |

I discovered my all time favourite author, Stephen King, when I loaned a book, Carrie, from the school library, *ahem* years ago and now I own everything he has ever had published

I was introduced to one of my favorite authors, Tim Winton, when I took an Australian lit class at a US university.

Word of mouth led me, but then I purchased a Hardcover... so I voted other because the word of mouth was the moment of discovery, not the purchasing of the book.

Other: I picked a book out of my cousin's bookshelf on a visit to her home when I was maybe 9. Now own most of Georgette Heyer's books in paperback, many in hardcover, and working on an ebook collection.
Another favorite, Dick Francis, I knew about from working in a bookstore, but would never have read had I not discovered my grandmother reading his books. So I borrowed from the library and became hooked. I have a full set in paperback (older titles), hardcover (newer or favorite titles), and ebooks (newest, including books co-written by Felix Francis). A magazine review and prompting from my husband brought 2 current favorites my way. Another old favorite I discovered in a Reader's Digest Condensed Book while waiting to be served in a crowded restaurant. Libraries, I love libraries (especially for ebooks)!! The Science Fiction Book Club. I forgot to send in the card to not get the months selections. I've been hooked ever since.

My favorite author is like my favorite Playboy Playmate, they change every month.
I selected other because they were books that were lent to me or gifted. If I don't return them I guess they were a gift. |

I read about Douglas Adams before and was delighted that his writing is every bit as witty as I supposed. So I just went in and bought a new paperback copy of HHGG.
