Validation error value '100' is invalid NCName

OK I'm getting the following validation error

Code:

value '100' is invalid NCName

for code that looks like:

Code:

<a id="100"></a></p>

It's not a one-off I'm getting for each anchor I'm using for my in-content TOC. Initially I thought it was because the ID was 1.1 etc - so I got rid off the dot's but still got the same problem?

I tried googling - but stupid Google doesn't recognise "a" as being significant in my search

never mind - put an underscore it and it worked

nope it's totally inconsistent - it will take _100 it won't take 1_6 will take _16 - any ideas what the actual label ID rules are ?

Cant start with a number.
I simply use P_## or X###
