Latest Bujold book
The ARC version of Lois McMaster Bujold's latest novel, Captain Vorpatril's Alliance, is now available at Baen, for fans of the Miles series.

Yup. Already bought and read it. Another excellent book from Ms. Bujold. I found myself laughing out loud several times. A link to it is here.

Thanks for the post. I haven't used Baen for a while; what's an eARC book?

It's the e-book version of the ARC, the Advance Reader's Copy. This used to be a small batch of pre-prints of a book with the more or less finished text but without an artistic cover sent out to selected folks to gauge (or stoke up) interest. The eARC is essentially a not-quite-done-yet version of the e-book. The text might still contain a few typos that will be caught in the final rounds of editing, there may or may not be the final cover, but other than that the book should be substantially similar to the finished product.

Essentially true, Gudy, but there have been, I'm told, time when significant changes happen between eARC and Final.
For many of us, the main advantage of an eARC is we get it NOW instead of in 3-5 months. Of course, that's a vicious cycle, since the wait till the next one from a favourite author starts now as well. Of course, the main disadvantage of an eARC is that it's $15 instead of $6. And, of course, the occasional formatting glitch, typo, or content mistake. eARCs are never part of a Webscription (or whatever non-memorable name they're using now), but the final version will be part of a bundle. In the case of Captain Vorpatril's Alliance, the final version won't be released until the November bundle. I just wasn't willing to wait that long. |
