This is really interesting. I tested treasure island as a epub and it worked ok.

Here's a few things

five different font sizes
eight different fonts... I THINK this might support adding more as long as they are true type

test to speech works ok I think the amazon voices are better. I heard a tad of chinese when they were turned on so I'm assuming that would work if I put in chinese text

a pdf worked well although it didn't have a hyperlink. I want to test more on this.

If this was in English I think it would really fly off the shelves...

Ok here's a few other things after using it.

epub support gives tts support..it does give tts in chinese

It does allow for it to be said faster or slower

jvdu is a bit iffy

you can make bookmarks and refer back to them

you can go to a given page

You can darken or lighten text

documents can be turned like on the kindle..upsidedown or to the left or right

there is a mp3 player with actual controls

I'm under the assumption there are male and female tts as there is a female character

It uses all of the screen so there isn't really the whole taskbar at the top or bottom

pdf zoom can be whatever percentage you want. there are ways to crop it but I'm not totally sure.

I wouldn't be surprised if amazon hires these guys/gals for the next upgrade...

I've spent some time translating the Chinese words into English.
All translations are based on my Kindle DX US edition using 2010.7.31“多看 for kindleDX”0.5.7.3509 Beta6版. I haven't checked whether they are the same in other Kindle versions.

I only have a few other questions..

1) It seems that there is a signal meter. Can this connect to whispernet or some other network?

2) Is there a highlight feature?

3) how exactly would someone take notes with the other characters given the keyboard?

I think this could be a huge asset to ESL especially on a larger screen. a DXG would be really nice with it.

It seems the Duokan team is planning to add multi-language interface. English and Japanese first probably. And the new version of duokan can connect to internet through usb cable. The support for Word file was also added.

With the DXG's PDF support looking like a bad joke, this project looks very interesting.

Does anyone use this firmware on DXG? I am a newbie to Kindle(received mine yesterday), and I am looking for information how stable the software is on DXG, what the dangers are (bricking etc).

went ahead and installed the duokan's firmware.

Every operation has a shortcut attached to it, so there's hardly need in the joystick and you can operate your Kindle more efficiently.
You can switch from the duokan's firmware to the original firmware back and forth.

indranet's translation was quite a help but still I felt myself kinda handicapped and could not test the firmware extensively (in the meantime, a couple of additional items have been added to the menu and settings not mentioned by indranet).
Just flipped through a couple of pdfs, djvus, epubs and chms.
All worked quite nicely, with page turning not slower than in the original firmware for pdf files.
On the downside, some pdfs come over as having thicker letters than in the original firmware, which I did not like. I can imagine you could make some adjustments in the duokan's settings but I could not test it, being completely ignorant in the Chinese.

Overall, I like it more than the original firmware and look forward to the English/German/Russian/French ... translations of the interface.
