Sony to look into the PRS-T1 freezing issue

This is probably about the best news so far for T1 owners who are experiencing freeze issues with their shiny new ereader.

Hopefully something will come of it, so please keep on complaining to Sony Support! They after all, are asking you to do just that.

https://forum.sel.sony.com/viewtopic.php?f=98&t=11588

Quote:
Bear in mind that the control of the touch screen is different in the PRST1 than in previous models:

• If you use two fingers to swipe the page this will invoke zoom mode rather than going to the next page.

• Keeping a thumb on the bottom corner of the screen while swiping will also activate the zoom feature.

The zoom feature may give the impression that the screen is frozen as in this mode swiping the screen will not make the Reader go to the next page. In zoom you will see the small hand lens symbol on the bottom right of the screen and the document symbol indicating where you are on the page. Swiping the screen in while in zoom will navigate around the page. If you then wish to go to the next page of the book just press the next button on the bottom of the Reader instead.

• If you tap the screen rather than swipe, this will make the dictionary pop-up rather than advance to the next page.

• If you swipe and hold the screen it will invoke the Page Advance feature and quickly advance the pages in a book.

Thanks, that's good to know. Maybe some of the freeze reports are down to a lack of familiarity with the device ?

You are joking, right? The problems occurs while reading and swiping the screen to the next or previous page. Then it keeps paging, pressing a button works to stop it but then nothing works except reset. Now how on earth can this have anything to do with familiarity with the device.

The Sony message just enumerates the other instances that may be perceived as a freeze but these are clearly not the instances in all the reports. Even if someone accidentally enters zoom mode or any other unknown mode, then the Home and Back buttons should still work and none of these mode includes automatic paging like the reported bug does.

Can you give me more info? I've been trying swipe only (previously only used buttons as those are more comfortable for me) for the past two weeks in an attempt to experience what you guys are - and nothing so far. I haven't had a crash or freeze..maybe an extra page flip or so every so often, but nothing like a crash or a freeze.

I have 1,200 books on internal memory, all manually side loaded by me. ..is there a certain portion of the screen where it does it more?

Red face Ah well.......

https://forum.sel.sony.com/viewtopic.php?f=98&t=11588

Rushed to get this on from the UK Sony forum - damn, foiled agin......

As ever, Sony seem stunned and surprised at this - I'd 've put money on it !

Obviously the market isn't ready for it, cos it's far too cuttin' edge, I 'spect that's the problem.
Too good for the likes of us lot.

Sony is not addressing one of the issues mentioned here several times & that is the out of control flipping of pages & then freezing. Other issues too. We do need to report this flipping of pages & the crashing afterward as sabredog suggested.. They did not address that issue in this release. All they are saying is that we need to educate ourselves on how to use the device. DUH!!!! I read the manual several times trying to figure out if I was doing something wrong.

Well, the flipping i'm wondering if it's not this :
Quote:
• If you swipe and hold the screen it will invoke the Page Advance feature and quickly advance the pages in a book.
Cause 1 : you're doing it wrong
Cause 2 : software coded in such a way it's to sensitive and fails to acknowledge the gestures properly
Cause 3 : a mix of 1 and 2
Cause 4 : faulty IR sending bad infos and being disturbed by dust or other stuff, causing the software to go wacky.

What release? All they said was they've received reports of "Freezing or crashing" and are getting their engineers to look into it, and for people experiencing problems to please report it.

Rather than Sony ignoring complaints and "not addressing" issues, it sounds to me like they are making a pretty good effort to solve the issues...

"Sony has received reports from some PRST1 owners that their Reader has been freezing or crashing. Sony engineering is currently examining the issue and would appreciate anyone experiencing the issue with their Reader to report it to Sony product support as soon as possible. The Sony support team need to know when and how this issue arises so that it can be reproduced, identified and resolved.

Please inform Sony product support if you also have the same freezing issue using the buttons, using the stylus or your finger to navigate and turn pages. "

I'm getting the impression Sony just can't win with the T1. Even after they release a statement asking people to write in their problems and inform us engineers are looking into it - people still complain they're "ignoring the problems."

For some, Sony is damned if they do, damned if they do not.

Nothing apparently is good enough.

I've just had an email from Sony saying there's a firmware update. If I succeed in navigating their web-site and getting it installed, I'll report back.

To me it sounds like Sony is acknowledging the reports of problems and are giving some suggestions as well. This does not sound like Sony is ignoring anything.
