eBook USB Driver trashed my Device Manager
I got my 1150 and downloaded the USB driver for winXP from the ebookwise website. After I installed the driver, I could no longer see my Device Manager or Network connections at all!! I managed to track down a fix that involved making changes to my registry. Now I am unwilling to try again on my laptop or desktop. Is there an alternative way of connecting my reader to my computer so I can transfer content directly to the device
P.S. I just noticed that the site I downloaded from was the site listed on my eBook and not the eBookwise site. Was this an older version perhaps?? IOt was from ebooktechnologies.com Last edited by hunter505; 04-10-2009 at 01:02 AM. Reason: New information |

What operating system are you using on your computer?
The usb driver is required to be installed and properly functioning to allow any content to be transferred to the ebook reader. There are two places to get the most updated usb driver, namely:Which file did you get? I've installed the ETI usb driver with no issues on WinXP SP3. Oh, by the way, after the installation, usually a "restart" can make things go a lot better/smoother. p.s. another site with the usb driver is filamentbooks site, but it has an older version (but I think identical driver). This has happened to me twice, on 2 different computers. There is a relatively simple fix, but you have to manually delete registry entries.
Send an email to ETI, and be sure to state your OS. They will respond in a couple hours. |

This also keeps happening to my friend whom I gave my EBW1150 to. I'll be anxious to know what you find out.
So far, reinstalling the USB driver has worked, but it would be great to know how to stop it from trashing the device manager. |

I'm running Vista home premium and before that XP Pro SP3, and before that Server 2k3.
Never had that happen to me yet... Please do post their response here so we all know what the issue is. (I'm going to wait before I install the software on my wife's computer) |

It was on my laptop. WinXP Pro with SP3. The file I used was from ETI. And about 6 restarts while trying to find fixes did nothing. The fix involved editing the registry. Can't remember the exact steps, but if you google "can't see device manager" you should find the fix. BTW, there was a supposed hotfix from MSFT that did absolutely nothing.

I had this same thing happen to my laptop running XP. I had to reset the computer to an earlier version before I attempted to install the usb driver from the website. After getting the computer to work properly I plugged the ereader into one of the usb ports and let the windows hardware driver wizard. It found and downloaded the drivers and I have had no problems with the computer or the ereader. Hope this helps.

Ok, I got brave and hooked the reader up to my desktop, let it load the driver on it's own. All worked fine. Didn't hurt my device drivers etc. But, the reader won't connect to the network. Network properties shows USB connection but no IP information. I get an error that says the network is unavailable, please try later. Am I missing something here??

You've made sure to load teh USB driver so it's sittin in the taskbar?
You've set the proxy settings if there are any for your setup? Ie with impserve you need to configure the proxy to 9090 (if using default). |

Yes, the USB driver is sitting in the taskbar. I have not made any changes to proxy settings. I do not use a proxy at all currently. I connect to a Verizon Broadband card which is in a dlink router. Are we talking about in my network settings on the router? Or in the ebook setting somewhere?

The proxy settings on the EBW1150. Are you using IMPSERV or the EBLibrarian software?

I am using whatever came with the reader. I purchased it new from an eBay sell. It came packed in the original box and I believe it is new. The only software i have downloaded is the USB driver and the eBook publisher from the ETI website.

I had the same problem on an XP laptop; in my case it was due to connecting the device before finishing the driver installation.
To fix it I uninstalled the driver, rebooted, went into BIOS and reenabled my network devices, rebooted, and then installed the driver properly. Out of four installations on three computers, only once did it ever mess up. Good luck! |

Have you run a utility program like glary to check your registry for errors?
I run Vista home pro and have not had problems with install. Amy |
