If they only use actors under five foot tall the problems solved.

Either that or make all the supporting actors do the movie on their knees with false shoes strapped to their kneecaps like Jose Ferrer in Moulin Rouge.

Lee Child addresses this himself on his own web page. It says:

"Lee is thrilled and can't wait to see the final cut.

Don't forget Lee has spent equal time on either side of the page/screen divide and understands better than most that changes are necessary and inevitable. And like Reacher he doesn't favor half-measures...if we're going to have a movie, then let's have a movie star in it! There is only a small handful of genuine global male stars. All are great actors—you don't get to be a star if you don't have the chops—but Cruise might well be the best of his generation. And again, Lee has been around actors forever—Laurence Olivier was still in his sixties the first time Lee worked with him—so he's a pretty good judge.

Plus, from an author's point of view, it's more exciting to see a new and fresh vision. Lee doesn't want to see a literal translation. Without comparing himself to Bob Dylan, he wonders what Dylan wanted to hear when someone covered, say, "All Along the Watchtower"...a tribute clone, or Jimi Hendrix? Lee thinks the Cruise/McQuarrie interpretation will build on the books in the same way."

Cruise is good. But he ain't the only one.

Hendrix didn't turn it into a lullaby. He kept it true to the spirit of the song. Personally, I don't think Cruise can do that. He may very well turn it into a good movie, but he won't be Reacher.

Lee refers to himself in the third person? That's just weird.

I think it will be a great movie, especially if McQuarrie is involved. The books are wonderful. Every bit as enjoyable as Donald Westlake's Parker books, another series about a single minded psychopath who doesn't know there's something wrong with him.

I would have preferred to see Liam Neeson in the role, but then I never thought Matthew McConaughey could pull off Mick Haller in the Lincoln Lawyer. So long as Cruise does not grin at the camera he should be fine.

All I want now is for someone to hire Josh Brolin to play Harry Bosch...and Jason Stratham do a decent job in the upcoming Parker movie.

Hey - don't shoot the messenger

As it happens, I agree with you. Cruise just doesn't seem right for the role to me either.

No worries, Bilbo. If you notice, I made sure to include quote marks inside the quotes, just so no one would think it was you. Or at least, I hoped they wouldn't think it was you. Aww... what the heck... lets shoot the messenger anyway.

It's just wrong wrong wrong!
Need a brooding hulk of a person to play Reacher, not someone who jumps around on Oprah's sofas

The reacher film will be about an ex military cop who is trying for a quiet life but whose morals get him involved in situations.

He will defend the innocent and the bad guys will assume because of his size that he is nothing to worry about! He will use his military training to give them a beating, he will be fast and deadly when he strikes.(think downey jr in sherlock movie)

It's a small charachter shift but will still work as a movie in my opinion.
Is it a different vision? Yes but as a BIG reacher fan I'm ok with it.
