Is there an easy way to add pictures to an ebook?

There is a cookbook I am thinking of getting from Kobo. The author has a website with photos of every recipe. Assuming that I get the ebook and succressfully 'liberate' it into plain old epub, what would be the easiest way to add the pictures in? If I save them as a PDF, can Calibre somehow merge the PDF with the epub file? Or would I be looking at using some sort of epub editor and inserting each one manually?

It is possible to insert pictures into an ebook via OpenOffice.org. You just make the ebook as an OpenDocument Text file (OpenOffice.org's default format) with the page size the same as your ebook reader's screen size. Insert and format the pictures directly into the document, using the print view so the page looks like it will on your ebook reader's screen.

When you have the ebook the way that you want it, save the file and then export it to PDF. It should look on your ereader the same as it looks on your computer screen.
