House panel approves broadened ISP snooping bill
A last-minute rewrite of the bill expands the information that commercial Internet providers are required to store to include customers' names, addresses, phone numbers, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, and temporarily-assigned IP addresses, some committee members suggested. By a 7-16 vote, the panel rejected an amendment that would have clarified that only IP addresses must be stored.

This had better not pass. The congress has a bad habit of trying to pass bad legislation.

Considering the current make up of the House of Reps, this isn't surprising. I seriously doubt it will make its way from committee to full house to senate to the presidents desk untouched. If it did, I'd expect some serious court challenges.
For an interesting read, look up Admiral Poindexter's old Project. Total information awareness, if you want to be appalled. |

So where are they going to get my bank account or credit card numbers? I can just start paying my bill by money order.

Nice hacking target when spies and others find out which ISPs that politicians etc. use.

Given the issues that multibillion dollar corporations have shown to have with keeping customer's info safe, I'm surprised this is being pushed through.

All this would seem like information that one would expect any ISP to keep. I'm surprised there needs to be legislation to cover it.

Looks like we're going to have to open a bank account just to keep our cable bill money in...and maybe see if we can attach it to a PO Box. |

Perhaps it's different in the US, but the overwhelming majority of people in the UK pay regular bills, such as internet bills, by direct debit - a regular payment taken directly from a bank account. Naturally, in order to do that, the ISP has to store the bank details. I'm certainly not aware of this having caused any problems for anybody - I pay pretty much all my bills by direct debit, because it's the most convenient method of doing so.
