I have not read the manual for your device, but you can vary the number of people by setting up a account for each and issuing passwords.

There is one thing people don't realize.
You can plug another router into the first.
When I got a new service recently, U-Verse. The installer ran a new cable from outside to where my computer sat. Then for expediency I guess, he just plugged the old wireless Trendnet router which had gone into a modem on the old DSL line into the wireless U-Verse box. This was quick because no passwords had to be put into the devices that were on the old service.

Later, after realizing what he had done, I pulled the old wireless Trendnet router out of the wireless 2Wire Router, and changed the passwords on the connected devices. Likewise I moved the one long Ethernet cable that had been in the old router over to the new router.

What I don't know is how many addresses will the first router handle and how it handles addresses from the second router, or is that idea not applicable.

Be very, very careful.
But that is a good thing if it happens since you cannot be held responsible for that legally and you have a good defense if somebody accuse you of downloading. In Sweden there actually was a movement to have open networks for this reason. And the networks that was open for everybody should be called ipredia or something similar. The law that this was a protest against was called IPREDIA.

This was actually done in a more "organized" way some years ago. I don't know if it still is, adn I don't remember exactly how it worked. I think you joined some sort of group and once a member (free) you got access to a list of where there were people willing to share their connection.

So it's OK to allow other people break the law so long as you don't get in trouble for it?

You're a bad neighbor.

Allow? I have open network for friends and other people that want to use it in a good way. Am I allowing people to break the law if I leave my bicykle outside and unlocked?

Actually in some high crime districts there are ordinances against leaving your car running and empty while you go into a store or leaving the keys in the car.

Still photos (like JPGs) and compressed videos don't actually take up much space, and they don't take much time to transfer. Every so often we get a case in the US of child pornography being traced to a particular person's computer, when the real criminal had simply "stolen" some unguarded bandwidth. It eventually gets sorted out, but it's a major hassle for the innocent computer owner. (And, of course, more child pornography has spread.)

So you're talking about issuing passwords so that only people you have chosen to grant access can get it? If so, why did you need to ask for any advice, since that process would be identical to what you did for your own access.

Because you seemed to be talking about allowing anonymous access to anyone within range.

Which is a completely different matter, and which makes you (and anyone else who does it) a bad neighbor, and a significant contributor to spam.

(For the record, I am an IT professional, and my job includes running several web and email servers. I review the access logs, and see daily attempts to compromise the servers, mostly by professional spammers. The record for an unpatched server being comporomised and used to send spam is less than 15 seconds after being connected to the internet.)

And most internet cafes know how to lock things down, so you can't do 3leet stuff like pirate music and movies easily.

Yes, of course there is no password. And yes I am a an IT professional also and I know about the 15 seconds and I now how to install my computers. But what have that to do with anything?

And I really do not see how an open network contribute to spam.

I have a similar setup to some neighbours. Only I have enabled the guest zone with a password and MAC filtering, so only those I rely on can use it.

I have the same router as you (DIR-655) and use traffic shaping (Advanced -> QoS Engine) to make sure my computers have first priority on the net; after all, I'm the one who's paying. To give your computers fixed IPs, you can "reserve" IPs to your own MAC addresses. That way I never experiences any limitations while others can use the full capasity when I don't use it.

The Guest Zone blocks access to your own devices and shields you from being hacked. Note that a good hacker can always overcome such blockings. You can also use Access Control (Advanced -> Access Control) to limit what others can do. You can also block traffic based on web addresses and such. Just play around with the advanced settings.

I know that others have said "Be careful" about this, but I just wanted to repeat it. Except exposing yourself to possible hackers, you could potentially lend your network to some pretty nasty people.
