[Help]need some help on Kindle4

hey folks,

just bought a used Kindle on a public market for a few bucks...seams to be working fine sofar but is has parental controls enabled (and no im not a child trying to break the parental lock) i looked around here and found nothing that helps factory reset is loked and software is up to date...any ways i can factory reset the kindle or break the parental control?

Easiest way (probably): Contact Kindle support, and explain the situation. They most probably have an ace up their sleeve.

Otherwise, you can follow the "simple debrick" instructions in the dev corner to boot it into diags mode (you don't need to actually de-brick or flash anything, you just need to get into diags mode), and from there you can blast the /dev/mmcblk0p3 partition to restore it to factory settings. But if you've never done anything like that before, this procedure will probably take a lot more time, and if you're not careful with what you're doing (meaning: you need to know exactly what you're doing, and why), you can also make the situation much worse.

ok managed to get the kindle in diags mode connected the usb ethernet/rndis on my ubuntu box configured ip/subnet 192.168.15.201/255.255.255.0 copyed mmcblk0p1.img to the kindle but cant connect ssh "ssh: connect to host 192.168.15.244 port 22: Connection refused"
any further help???

Hmmm... sounds good so far. K4 diags *should* come with SSH pre-installed, but yours obviously doesn't - and I don't seem to find any image which does. I suggest to ask in the simple debricking thread (I'm personally not terribly involved with the K4, but some other people there should be able to help you).

Another option would be to jailbreak it, install usbnetwork on main, and then SSH into it while in main, and "rm -rf /var/local/*; reboot".

omg... never mind i got it working and if anybody is stuck with the same problem that a password is set or parental control is enabled...just type "resetmykindle" as password and it will factory reset your device

I see that the "resetmykindle" password is documented on the amazon K3 troubleshooting page:

It is good to know that it works on other kindle models as well.
