Oddly enough the Dune movie was made in collaboration with Frank Herbert; I remember him having quite a bit of input. But I didn't love the movie either.
My vote for worst adapation would be Starship Troopers. It's probably my favorite book, certainly the one I've read the most, and the movie was an enormous disappointment. |

One other movie I found a disappointment was The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I've enjoyed the book, the radio drama, the TV series, and found the movie to be blah at best.

Oh no! I quite enjoyed 'Dune', 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' and even thought 'Golden Compass' was passable.
I think I'd had my expectations sufficiently lowered before I saw them - they were better than I was expecting. |

You're all wrong all of those book to movie deals were Golden Globe, if not Oscar material compared to "High Crusade" which bears resmblance to the Poul Anderson Book by same title in that it has the title and some guys in chain mail.

Oh definitely. Although I wasn't actually all that fussed about the book, but it was head and shoulders and then some above the film.

hey now! if you get into the brain of the Master and the time he was writing... jack booted nazis were the image of all the ickiness in life, bad or good! having reports in film reel format was de riguer of the day... I thought they really got into modern technology circa 1942 reality film.

Oh, i forgot one: The earthsea series by Ursula K. Le Guin. A great read - but the movie was like a B-movie.
