Hard Magic - Larry Correia

Just finished "Hard Magic", the first book of the "Grimnoir Chronicles" by Larry Correia (Author of the Monster Hunter International series).

Well now, as much fun as the MHI books have been I have to say that it really felt like Larry was truly at home in Hard Magic.

My biggest complaint was a tendency to bounce the first-person perspective around far too much (especially when the characters were present in the same room) but eventually I was able to get used to that somewhat idiosyncratic style so that it wasn't quite so distracting to me.

On the whole, the book was fantastic and though I'd have liked to see the "gumshoe" character figure out a few more clues, ultimately the book was a very satisfying adventure that did a good job of being self-contained (with a beginning, middle, and end) while still leaving a good opening for the next book.

I would call this one a strongly recommended "summer read" if you like blending alternate history with magic and a touch of "film Noir".

If you like "Hard Magic" you might also like "Bitter Seeds" by Ian Tregillis

His style is a little rough, but I liked MH 1 & 2, and I intend to read Hard Magic soon.

thanks for the suggestion will definitely see about picking up a copy or at least doing some more digging on it.

44% through and i am loving it. the quotes at the beginning of the chapters are fun. love the alternate reality this is all set in. very neat idea, i'm loving it more page by page. this should be a great series, up there with his mhi series. glad i got into it, there's a lot less gun porn in this one although i didn't mind it one bit in mhi. (just in case you were iffy because of that fact, hard magic has considerably less).
tons of magic though - actives. it's all a really neat idea and flows together perfectly. it reads like a giant comic book you can almost see the cells where things take place and a new slide comes in *meanwhile in san francisco* . anyway just wanted to touch on it and for anyone that liked mhi they will have no problem liking this, glad i finally loaded it.

I'm 97% (who says ebook readers haven't changed us?) of the way through MHI #1, which has been fun, so I will return (via MHI #2) and try out Hard Magic. Thanks for the tip .

it's a pretty good romp, right up my alley. fun, action, crazyness, monsters ( not always necessary but awesome when done well ), in the new book magic - lots of new terms..they're easy to grasp as you get through the pages but he has a glossary of all the new terms in the back of his book. nothing crazy but knowing before you go in is cool but also learning as you read is neat as well, i did the latter and only looked at the glossary after finishing the book.

Great, I will give it a go.

I remember struggling through A Clockwork Orange, with the Russian-based slang, and though it was a struggle at first, it was worth the effort.

it's not really slang, just terms for the magic people and their powers etc.
the book is set in an alternate reality, very cool concept and quotes that start off each chapter are awesome to read especially when they're by well known figures throughout history.
