Amazon also frequently updates their software to defeat DRM removal, which is a necessity if you want to keep control of your library (I have many books that I purchased in formats that are no longer viable and I REFUSE to just buy them again because someone decided to make changes to MY books)

I've had a couple of Kobos and I don't find them buggy - again, YMMV.

But the bottom line for me is, don't let anyone lock you into anything where your books and your devices are concerned.

Kobo all the way (and they have a good variety of devices, so you should have no trouble finding one that suits you)

That's why I have settled with PocketBook. I'm in Europe and this is an EU brand so maybe this is an advantage.

Almost EU, I think a Ukrainian company that moved to Switzerland. Switzerland is very tightly connected to EU.
I'd maybe buy a Pocketbook if Kobo didn't exist.

Frankly I don't know what I'd buy if Kobo suddenly stopped making ereaders. The Pocketbook UI is not good enough for me, the same for Kindles and Nooks. Still, KOReader on a Pocketbook would probably be the next best thing, although KOReader has its own issues, so that would also be less than ideal.

My Kobos have spoiled me. Now everything else feels unsatisfying in comparison.

I actually like their UI - at least the library portion of it. Kobo doesn't let me sort by language, for instance, which is incredibly annoying. To me the big problem with PB is the stone age hardware that makes their readers incredibly slow. Only the colour versions have better hardware and are also much snappier.

And their newest readers don't use the latest Carta technology, so their screens are worse.

I like PB UI and yes, maybe they are slow (I'm not sure as I haven't tried any other brand), but I find it not annoying so I ordered another PB device. Era will join my InkPad 4. I like reading on it and that is the point. I also like the send-by-email feature (so I can send ebooks via email from my Calibre). Also, the PB Cloud is nice to sync between devices.

If Kobo went away, I would move on to the next best. I don't really care about "UI" as I spend the vast majority of my time reading. The lack of choices for margins, line spacing, font size, ... on Kindles and Nooks isn't ideal, but it would be good enough if there weren't better alternatives.

By UI I meant everything, including font/margin/etc settings. I could live with less than perfect library settings, but the choice of reading settings is important to me. Pocketbooks don't have font weight options, for example, and that is a dealbreaker for me. For their native reading app, at least. KOReader has its own problems (it's very slow with huge omnibus editions and has no library management), but it would probably be the next best thing to my patched Kobos.

As far as I can see how it goes with these e-book readers, it is mostly a matter of personal preferences. I think each of us has its own best brand.

For my (our) second e-reader I weighted between Kobo Libra 2 and PocketBook Era, but since I already own PB InkPad 4 I am familiar with the software and it is enjoyable enough for me. I decided to go with the Era because it is a familiar UI and system. I think syncing will be much easier if I have same brands.

Yes, of course.

If you want syncing of your sideloaded books across several devices, then Kindle, Pocketbook or KOReader are the only options. Kobos have no way to sync sideloaded books between devices (unless you use KOReader). For me that's not important, as I don't use this feature.

I like the PocketBook interface and features also. I especially like that ADE is built-in so, in a pinch, I can borrow or buy directly on the PocketBook — and not just from one (designated) eBook store. It's actually easier, however, to buy from an eBook store (like ebooks.com) with my computer and just send the ACSM file to the PocketBook using Send-to-PocketBook via email (or directly, via USB cable). Same with borrowing from Overdrive. I like to turn my eReaders off completely when not reading (battery lasts much longer between charges this way). Only my PocketBook Touch HD 3 can be up and running in about 5 seconds. The Nook, Tolino and Kobo take much longer.

That said, I can read on any of them. I use the same font on all of my own books, so the Nook using "Publisher's Font" along with the others where I sideload the font to the device) can use Constantia, so the pages look pretty much the same. Since I don't normally use KePub, the page numbers are the same even on the Kobo, so I can sync simply by going to the page number I left off on — on any ePub reader.

I don't consider my PocketBook slow, but I don't do a lot of organizing with Calibre — just mostly read.

After you've used the Era for a bit, would you mind reviewing the screen. I keep hearing that the screen is "dull" or "lacks contrast" from some folks while others say it's got a sharp screen, so I'm curious how it compares to the InkPad 4 screen (which I think is comparable to my Touch HD 3).

Great, pretty much how I use the InkPad 4 currently. I just want to read and it works. Calibre is my library manager, but I backup all books (files) on my NAS device separately as well. I also use one (default) font for every book, sometimes I just increase the font size (between 12 to 14 pt).
