Well, that sucks. And here Amazon just dropped the price of The Rats to $6.59 today.

I had heard he was ill.

I just finished 'The Rats' about 4-5 days ago.

I read The Rats first back in the 70s, I think. One of the first horror novels I remember reading.

I still have the paperback, with the cigarette ad in the middle.

The Rats was one of my first horror books. He was very good at what he did, a sad loss.

I think The Rats was a bit of a rite of passage in my youth.

I will never forget hearing him being interviewed on Woman's Hour many years ago and describing a visit he made to a windmill (or something similar) situated on the top of a cliff.

I'm not sure if there's a recording of it available anywhere (if so, please do listen to it!), but it should go down in history as one of the BBC's great broadcasting moments. The interviewer - and, I'm sure, everyone listening - was spellbound by the tale.

Spoiler:

Herbert spent a long time (by radio standards) describing a trip on which he saw this windmill and felt drawn to it. It was abandoned, had a mysterious air about it, etc (build up your own James Herbert atmosphere at this point). When Herbert reached the building he felt compelled to enter it (build up more atmosphere, darkness, etc). He then felt drawn to the upper floor, where there was nothing, except for something drawing him out on to a balcony overhung the cliff.

When he was on the balcony, he began to feel something physically grabbing hold of him, clutching at his foot, trying to drag him off the balcony and down the drop below. Herbert realised it was some kind of supernatural force.

"And it was pulling my leg - just like I'm pulling yours."

The interviewer was speechless - I just wish I could have aeen her face.

I'll be starting The Fog in about 1 week (after I finish two books by two other writers), to celebrate his writing and his dedication to the field of horror.

I really recommend Creed. It's not like his other books. It's the most 'literary.' Actually it reads a bit like a Banks book. Really good book. Funny and scary and unputdownable.

I knows lots of kids who began their reading career with the Rats. Unfortunately it ended shortly after, lol.

I've read several of his books (including all the rat novels) and I used to buy his books for my sister as birthday or Christmas presents.

I haven't read any of his works for a long time now and should try and read one as a tribute.
