You may have noticed from the amount of posts that I do in the subject that history is one of my favorite genres.

The Vineyards of Liberty is the first volume of James MacGregor Burns' magisterial trilogy on the history of America, called The American Experiment. I have to assume that markdowns of the other two volumes will be forthcoming soon. However, you may be like me, being more interested in the early history of this country and, therefore, not so interested in owning the last two volumes anyway.

Over a month after the D-Day landings the Allies were still confined to the Normandy peninsula. The German line was anchored by the medieval town of Caen, which the British were supposed to have occupied on D-Day. The key to capturing Caen was Hill 112, known to the Germans as "Kalverienberg" (or "Mount Calvary").

Under pressure from Churchill, Montgomery launched a major offensive. Unfortunately, German reinforcements delayed by Allied bombing were now arriving in the Caen area. The British found themselves facing no less than four SS divisions, the 1st, 2nd, 9th and 10th and the Tigers of the 502nd SS Heavy Panzer Regiment. An all-out Allied effort, including heavy bombers and naval bombardment, was required to secure the final victory.

This new addition to the Battleground Europe series details all the action around Hill 112. Numerous illustrations and maps complement the lively text.

Great find. Unfortunately, I waited too long to grab it--it's up to $1.99 now. I went to Kobo to see if their price was in the same neighborhood, and I could squeeze a few more cents from the price with a discount code, but their price was $7.39.

I consider myself fairly knowledgeable, though by no means a student, of World War II, but I was not aware, or had forgotten about "the battle of Odon." Wikipedia notes that there were actually two battles, one in June and one in July, 1944. Both were tactical loses for the Allies, but strategic victories. Fascinating stuff. As soon as I can get some time, I want to go on YouTube and see if there are any documentaries on the battles.

True crime and serial killer expert David Elio Malocco (author of Who’s Who Serial Killers, The Top 100) has produced a magic little book here on Forensic Science and Crime Scene Analysis.

The author is a former top criminal lawyer with dual degrees in law and psychology and diplomas in criminal profiling and forensic science.

The book is essentially an introduction to Forensic Science and is the perfect companion for anyone interested in studying forensic science or crime scene analysis; anyone who writes about crime; lawyers, solicitors and barristers involved in criminal law; anyone involved in law enforcement or, in fact, anyone who reads crime novels or watches crime programs on television.

Just how accurate are crime programs like CSI: New York, True Detective, Criminal Minds and Dexter? Apparently, there are far removed from reality and mask the clear division of labor which exists between crime science investigators and law enforcement operatives.

The book is packed full of information and is written in a very easy to read and witty style – nothing like a text book. It also contains a very helpful Glossary of Terms at the back as well as a comprehensive list of reference books for the serious student.

The first part of the book deals with crime scene analysis – what happens at a crime scene, or as David Elio Malocco puts it – “what’s supposed to happen” and covers the basics like crime scene definition, recognition and documentation. It lists exactly the sort of evidence crimes scene investigators look for at a crime scene.

The second part is an introduction to forensic science. Once the evidence is collected at the crime various procedures and tests are carried out in the laboratory to help link the evidence to the crime. It covers such diverse topics as fingerprints, firearms, ballistics, computers, autopsies, forensic pathology, poisons and forensic toxicology, the identification of decaying bodies and skeletons, cranio-facial reconstruction, serology, fraud, DNA and cyber crime as well as providing a very comprehensive section on search warrants and other aspect of law and criminal evidence.

But, perhaps the most enjoyable chapter is the tongue in cheek one entitled Committing the Perfect Crime which could have been called Everything You Need to Know about How Not to get Caught but were Afraid to Ask.

The book is a classic companion for anyone interested in crime.

Though greatly overshadowed by the major theatres of operation--the European and Pacific--in World War II, the China-Burma theatre was the theatre in which the Allied soldiers had probably the greatest overall casualty rate and experienced the greatest suffering. This was not caused so much by the enemy, the Japanese, but by the disease and malnutrition caused by day-in and day-out habitation in the jungles and with the logistical problems of resupplying them in those areas. This was only exacerbated when monsoon season arrived, which brought constant rain for weeks on end. Those soldiers truly suffered a lot, but sadly, are not remembered or honored today as greatly as their fellow soldiers who served in Europe and the Pacific.
