If that is a screen grab from a Kindle, it would have to be a Kindle Fire.

Not sure I'm following your logic. The Fire is no longer the only Kindle device that supports KF8. Or did you mean something else entirely?

The two eink Kindles that support KF8 both have line heights larger (KF8 only) then what is display in the screen grab. So because of this, that cannot be a screen grab from an eink Kindle.

Gotcha. I just couldn't see how that was relevant to Tesseract's "how are they doing a dropcap in this Amazon book?" question. I still don't understand why it would be relevant, to be honest. The answer is; "it's a KF8 or Topaz ebook, where dropcaps are possible." And the fact that the same ebook renders differently on different devices/apps strongly suggests KF8—since Topaz would likely render consistently across all Kindle devices/apps.

Only with the default line spacing, Jon. Reduce it one "notch" in settings, and it looks absolutely fine.

I was commenting on the line spacing of the eink KF8 vs the Fire's line spacing for the screen grab.

And as Harry said the eInk line spacing can be adjusted in the devices view settings so that it's no longer as large as the default. It looks fine.

It looks *better*, but I wouldn't say fine: at the thinnest setting, it's still larger than the medium setting on a mobi6... ;-)

"you can't set a right margin for a block quote"

You were posting before the Fire was widely released, of course. KF8 devices and apps do support a right margin indent.

For those of us who make a living by writing and publishing, the Amazon formats are all-important. In my experience since Barnes & Noble began selling ebooks, Kindle editions outsell Nook editions ten to one, and none of the other retailers are anywhere near B&N.

And that's only on Amazon.com! The UK store also outsells B&N by two or three to one.

I am sure that others' experience is different, but I have been actively publishing ebooks for nearly five years, and that is how the business has worked for me.
