Target pulls Kindle from virtual shelves, physical ones may follow

Quote:
Since 2010, Target has happily hawked Amazon's e-reading wares. The retailer even carved out a branded corner of its online shop just for the Kindle. Now though, that store within a store is empty and conspicuously missing from Target's virtual shelves is Amazon's entire Kindle line.

Apparently Target realized that they were selling a device whose purpose was to make it even easier for their customers to shop at the competitor.

But you could say the same about any laptop top, netbook, tablet, or other similar device that they sell. (shrugs)

Probably Target is no longer getting the profit they expect from sales of Amazon products.

If they're still stocking Kindles in the store, and last I saw this weekend they were, then maybe it's more of a problem with shipping on-line orders from Amazon.

Could be they're finding it hard to be middle-man between the customer and Amazon's orders, especially if a delivery goes missing. And I'm not sure they'd be getting a lot of Kindle orders on the Target site, when it's just too easy to go to Amazon and order straight from them.

As for the physical stores, our local ones still have plenty of Kindles, and fewer in stock of the others. They've had one white and one black Sony T-1, and a few boxes of the others, but I don't think they've restocked those in a while. They've also moved all the eReaders from the Apple/Ipad isle and put in some speakers. The ereaders have been moved to the 'electronic storage' isle, with the storage cards, portable hard drives and flash cards.

To me it looks like they're just going to drop the whole ereader line, and stick with the Apple devices. They may be selling better, or they get a better cut.

For some reason, this seems hard to believe. I can't see Apple giving ANYONE a bigger discount than anyone else. ;-)

technically you could say it, but it wouldn't be true by anything close to the same degree.

It is going to hurt Target a lot more than it will hurt Amazon. People who want to buy a Kindle will either go to another store such as Best Buy or order it online. It's not a good idea to drive people from your doors to a competitor. And why would a brick and mortar store want to alienate customers who want to shop at a brick and mortar store? I prefer to go to the store to buy something, I'll only order it online if I can't get it in a store. But the more a store drives people to shop online, the more likely they will be to do other shopping online, and thus do less of their shopping at Target. Target isn't bringing Amazon to its knees with this.

??? Heck of a lot more true of a laptop than of a Kindle.
How often do you think folks comparison shop for clothes and housewares on an eink reader?

Even the Fire isn't so great for general online shopping compared to any PC.

Anybody think that maybe Amazon is cutting the ties? It would make sense if they do all the shipping for Target.com. It's what happened to Borders when I first started shopping at Borders.com...I became an Amazon customer and stopped shopping at Borders. Its possible that Amazon has achieved its Target goals and now no longer wants to do profit sharing on the kindle line.

I buy my Kindles from Walmart or Best Buy. Better deals than either Amazon or Target.
